Alfred, Nazareth and Stevens Earn E8 Wins
NAZARETH v HARTWICK
Visiting Nazareth built a first-quarter lead and never trailed Saturday in an Empire 8 Conference men's lacrosse game at Hartwick. The Golden Flyers prevailed 18-10 against the Hawks to improve to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in conference games.
Nazareth returns to action Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. as the Golden Flyers will travel to Alfred to finish a suspended game from April 10 in which the score was tied 6-6 at halftime. The game will be resumed at the start of the third quarter. Hartwick dropped to 5-6 overall and 1-2 in conference games.
Nazareth had nine different goal scorers with freshman
Troy Haefele scoring four times and freshman
Luke Wooters contributing three goals and two assists. Junior
Collin Clark contributed two goals and three assists, while juniors
Chris Aycock and
Chris Peterson and sophomore
Kyle Fanning each scored twice.
Trevar Haefele,
Will Fallo and
Chris Benza also scored, the latter being the first of his career.
Sophomore faceoff specialist
Drew Simoneau won 23 of 29 draws and scooped up a school-record 19 ground balls as Nazareth controlled the time of possession. Freshman goalie
Scott Brown had 10 saves.
Nazareth scored just eight seconds into the game as
Troy Haefele converted a quick pass from his brother Trevar, who added a goal three minutes later. Nazareth expanded its lead to 7-3 by halftime and 11-6 after three quarters.
Two more flurries followed in the fourth quarter. First the Golden Flyers scored three times in a 25-second stretch with Wooters scoring twice and Collin Clark getting the other goal. Later on Nazareth scored four times in a 2:13 stretch with goals from Fanning, Aycock, Clark and Benza.
Wooters' three goals upped his team-leading total to 33 to go with 13 assists and 46 points.
Troy Haefele has 26 goals and 36 points. Simoneau's 19 ground balls boosted his season total to 128 as he closes in on the Nazareth single-season record of 141 set by Terry Goetz in 1995.
STEVENS v UTICA
The nationally ranked No. 7 Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team rolled to a 17-7 Empire 8 Conference victory at home against Utica College on Saturday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex. With the victory, Stevens is now 9-2 on the season and 3-0 in the Empire 8. Ten different Ducks tallied at least one point in the win.
Senior
Nicolas Philippi (Mullica Hill, N.J.) led the way for Stevens with five goals and one assist for six points. Philippi kicked off the scoring onslaught in the matchup with his first goal just 1:44 into the first quarter and would post a hat trick within the first 7:45 of the opening frame. Philippi added four groundballs in the contest.
Between the three Philippi tallies, senior
Harrison Dorne (Morristown, N.J.) picked up his first of four markers on the day to stake the Ducks to a 4-0 lead halfway through the first. He then put Stevens ahead, 5-0, on a pass from sophomore
Michael Maroon (Virginia Beach, Va.) with 2:44 to go on a man-up goal.
Utica finally got on the board with 1:51 left to wrap up the first period offense. The Pioneers would strike first in the second quarter to bring the contest to a 5-2 difference, but Stevens would score three of the next four goals to build an 8-3 advantage heading into halftime.
Freshman
Alex Haubrich (Voorhees, N.J.) tallied his first career goal, unassisted, with 12:02 remaining in the second stanza for a 6-2 lead. After Utica netted its final goal of the first half four minutes later, Dorne took a pass from Philippi at the 4:08 mark and then freshman
Griffin Rock (Bay Shore, N.J.) capitalized on a feed from Maroon with two minutes left.
Rock scooped up four groundballs in the game as well.
After the half, the Ducks blew the game wide open after taking a 9-3 edge in the first 2:13 of the third. Utica scratched another goal off with 7:37 on the clock but the Ducks would rip off four scores in a 1:35 span to balloon their lead out to 13-4 with 5:10 to go in the third period. The teams would trade the final two scores of the period and head into the fourth at a 14-5 difference.
Maroon netted three of the six third quarter goals, while Dorne, Philippi and freshman
Zachary Raposo (Tewksbury, N.J.) all recorded one. Rock assisted on the first tally from Maroon and senior
Brian Seldeen (Wayne, N.J.) assisted on the second.
In the fourth, senior
Rich Dupras (Hillsborough, N.J.) picked up a man-up score, while freshman
Anthony Raposo (Tewksbury, N.J.) posted the 10-score difference with 4:21 left in regulation to conclude the scoring.
Junior
Tim Culloty (Mahwah, N.J.) handed out one assist to go along with two groundballs and a caused turnover. Sophomore
Brian Fahy (Eastchester, N.Y.) forced three turnovers and chipped in three groundballs.
The freshmen duo of
Jeff Wyckoff (Summit, N.J.) and
Brett Incollingo (Yardley, Pa.) combined to win 16-of-24 faceoffs for Stevens. Incollingo went 10-for-12 and picked up a game-high seven groundballs.
Sophomore
Matthew Deiner (Millstone Twp., N.J.) stopped 10 shots in the victory and also had two groundballs. Deiner played all by 3:02 of the contest before being replaced by senior
Ben Shaffer (Armonk, N.J.).
The shot distribution in the game was fairly close, with Stevens holding a 59-42 edge. Half of Utica's shot were taken in the second quarter. Stevens dominated possession with 45 groundballs to 26 for the Pioneers and won 18-of-26 faceoffs.
Stevens will head out for conference road games against Elmira College and Nazareth College on April 17 and 20 before wrapping up the regular season at home against Hartwick College and Ithaca College on the 24th and 27th.
ALFRED v ELMIRA
The Alfred University men’s lacrosse team held off visiting Elmira College, with a 9-8 victory, Saturday afternoon in their final Empire 8 home game of the season. This win improves the Saxons to 7-3 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
A pair of goals in the first and second quarter from junior attacker Brett Carroll (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) kept the Saxons with the Soaring Eagles at 4-4, until a goal from senior attacker Matt Zon (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) gave AU the 5-4 lead heading into halftime.
Elmira netted two goals in the opening of the third quarter giving them a 6-5 edge until junior midfielder Ben Demarco (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown) scored three-straight unanswered goals to put AU on top (8-6) heading into the fourth.
The Soaring Eagles answered back with a pair of goals at the 11 and six minute marks of the fourth quarter. Junior midfielder Derek Green (Pittsburgh, PA/The Kiski School) then netted an unassisted goal inside of three minutes to give Alfred the victory.
For the game, Alfred held a 51-24 shot advantage, and a 25-14 ground ball advantage.
Junior defender Chris Tauterouff (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) picked up a game-best nine ground balls and senior defender Jake Spadoni (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder) caused a game-high four turnovers to anchor the Saxon defense.
Senior Justin Becker (Conesus, NY/Livonia) made eight saves in 58 minutes for AU.
AU plays its last home game of the season against Elmira College on Saturday, April 13, at 4 p.m.
HOUGHTON v KEUKA
Michael Ball (Binghamton, NY, Chenango Valley) scored three goals to lead the Highlanders in a 21-4 loss to Keuka College in men's lacrosse action Saturday.
The Highlanders fell behind 10-0 after the first inning and trailed 14-2 at the half. Ball scored both Houghton goals in the second quarter, with
Tyler Kempney (Carthage, NY, Carthage High School) picking up assists on both.
Kempney added his own scored, his team-leading 27th on the year, in the third quarter and Ball scored his third of the game and 17th of the campaign in the fourth quarter.
Keuka outshot the Highlanders, 47-22, and had a 56-33 advantage in ground balls.
Houghton keepers
Gabriel Browning (Aitkin, MN, Aitkin High School) (14 GA, 8 saves) and
Josh Haingray (Houghton, NY, Houghton Academy) (7 GA, 3 saves) each played one half in goal.
