Empire 8 Athletes of The Week: April 15, 2013
Baseball Player of the Week – St. John Fisher
Nick Flemister, Junior, C/OF – Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland
Nick Flemister hit safely in all four games last week for the Cardinals. He went 7-for-13 overall including two doubles and drove in five runs. Flemister notched two runs and drew two walks as well. In a 7-4 win over Oswego State he went 4-for-4 with five RBI (both career highs). On April 13 in a 3-0 loss to Case Western Reserve University, he was one of four Cardinals to register a hit. April 14 featured a doubleheader split with Case. Flemister got things started in the first game with a walk in the second inning as the Cardinals went on to score three runs. In the second game, Fisher scored first in the second inning when Flemister led off with a single and was driven in three batters later.
Baseball Pitcher of the Week – Ithaca
John Prendergast, Sophomore – Clifton Park, NY/ Shenendehowa
John Prendergast carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the last inning against Utica on April 14 before allowing two runs. He had four strikeouts in the game and picked up the victory, which helped Ithaca extend its winning streak to 18 games.
Softball Player of the Week – Utica
Chelsea Monroe, Junior – Watertown, NY/General Brown
Chelsea Monroe batted .429 and hit four home runs to help Utica to a 6-0 record last week, including back-to-back Empire 8 sweeps over Nazareth and St. John Fisher. In Empire 8 games, she had a .444 average with three home runs with two RBI. Her biggest performance was against Fisher on April 14 where she went 4-for-6 on the day with two two-run homers. On the week, Monroe scored six runs and totaled seven RBIs with a slugging percentage of 1.357.
Softball Pitcher of the Week – Ithaca
Laura Quicker, Freshman – West Islip, NY/St. John the Baptist
Quicker appeared in two games in relief for Ithaca and earned two wins. She had five strikeouts and didn't walk a single batter in her seven innings of work, and also didn't allow a single run. On April 9 the Bombers won a 6-5 game in nine innings against Cortland. Quicker pitched the final two innings allowing two hits with one strikeout. On April 14, Quicker and the Bombers blanked Nazareth 6-0 in the first game of a doubleheader. Quicker struck out four batters in five innings of play, allowing one hit.
Men’s Lacrosse Player of the Week – Nazareth
Drew Simoneau, Sophomore, Midfield – Manchester, NH/Kimball Union
Drew Simoneau continued his dominance at the faceoff position on April 13 by winning 23 of 29 draws in an 18-10 win over Hartwick. He also set a school record with 19 ground balls. For the season, Simoneau is among the national leaders with 128 ground balls (11.6 per game) and has won 174 of 279 faceoffs (62.3 percent).
Men’s Lacrosse Goalie of the Week – Stevens
Matthew Deiner, Sophomore – Millstone Township, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy
Matthew Deiner stopped 10 shots in a 17-7 victory over Utica on April 13 to lift the Ducks to a 9-2 overall record. Deiner also picked up two groundballs in his eighth win of the season. This marks his seventh double-digit save effort of the season.
Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week - Utica
Morgan Dupont, Sophomore, Forward – Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park
Morgan DuPont registered nine points in a 1-1 week for the Pioneers. She recorded seven assists in just two games, including three against conference-leading Ithaca College on April 13. Earlier in the week she scored two goals and added four assists in the win against SUNYIT.
Women’s Lacrosse Goalie of the Week – Nazareth
Tara Prosak, Junior – Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt
Tara Prosak made a career-high 15 saves on April 13 against St. John Fisher. She has pushed her save percentage to .512 for the season.
Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week – Utica
Hunter Padgett, Senior – Clinton, NY/Clinton
Senior Hunter Padgett placed third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:53.00 at the Coach P Open hosted by Moravian College on April 13.
Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week – Utica
Robert Tutein, Freshman – Nanuet, NY/Nauet
Freshman Robert Tutein took fourth in the high jump in his first outing of the outdoor season. Tutein recorded a jump of 1.98 meters at the Coach P Open hosted by Moravian College on April 13.
Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week – Nazareth
Hannah Brackley, Sophomore – Horseheads, NY/Elmira Notre Dame
Hannah Brackley performed well for the Golden Flyers at Saturday's Roberts Wesleyan Invitational. She finished first in the 200-meter dash with a winning time of :26.67 and placed second in the 100-meter dash in :12.75.
Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week – Stevens
Amira Dardir, Sophomore – Jersey City, NJ/McNair Academy
Amira Dardir placed first overall in the heptathlon with a school record total of 3,880 points as she took first in three events and second in another. Dardir's mark currently sits third by ECAC standards and is the 24th best total in the NCAA. She posted the top marks in the 100-meter hurdles (16.00 seconds), high jump (1.63 meters) and long jump (4.86 meters). Her throw of 24 meters in the javelin was good for second overall in the competition. Dardir owned the old school record of 3,399 points set last season. The sophomore topped the next closest athlete by nearly 300 points (3,880 to 3,586).
Men’s Golf Athlete of the Week – Utica
Charles Coppola, Freshman – Utica, NY/Whitesboro
The Utica College golf team placed 4th overall at The SUNY Delhi Bronco Invitational on April 12 hosted at The College Golf Course at Delhi. Freshman Charles Coppola led the way for the Pioneers with a team-low round of 79, good for a sixth placed tie in the individual event.
Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week – Nazareth
Ryan McCormick, Senior – Rochester, NY/Irondequoit
Ryan McCormick helped Nazareth to a pair of Empire 8 Conference victories last week with dominant wins in both singles and doubles matches. On April 9, the Golden Flyers posted an 8-1 win over St. John Fisher. McCormick won first singles in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 and teamed with Tyler Williams for an 8-2 victory at first doubles. On Saturday, Nazareth won 8-1 against Utica as McCormick took first singles 6-0, 6-1 and earned an 8-0 win at first doubles.
