Simoneau and Deiner named Athletes of the Week
Drew Simoneau, sophomore faceoff specialist for the Nazareth men's lacrosse team, has been named Empire 8 Player of the Week and Matthew Deiner, sophomore for Stevens Institute of Technology, has been named the Goalie of the Week.
Simoneau continued his dominance at the faceoff position for the Golden Flyers last Saturday at Hartwick as he won 23 of 29 draws in an 18-10 Empire 8 Conference victory over the Hawks.
Simoneau set a school record with 19 ground balls to boost his season total to 128 (11.6 per game), second best in Division III. Simoneau also ranks among the Division III leaders in faceoff winning percentage. He's won 174 of 279 draws (62.3 percent).
Nazareth plays again Tuesday as the Golden Flyers travel back to Alfred to complete a suspended game from April 10. The game will be resumed with the start of the third quarter with a game tied 6-6. Play begins at 4:30 p.m.
Deiner stopped 10 shots in the 17-7 conference victory over Utica College on April 13. With the win, the Ducks improve to a 9-2 overall record. He also picked up two groundballs in his eighth win of the season. This marks his seventh double-digit save effort of the season.
The Ducks head out to Elmira College on April 17 for a 4 p.m. conference matchup and then square off with Nazareth College on the 20th at 5 p.m. for another Empire 8 tussle in Rochester, N.Y.
