ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Rochester socked three home runs in the first game a scheduled softball doubleheader at Nazareth Tuesday as the Yellowjackets defeated the Golden Flyers in a five-inning game, 12-0. The second game was in the second inning when heavy rain forced postponement of the non-conference game.
The Yellowjackets improved to 10-15 overall, while Nazareth dropped to 5-16. The Golden Flyers are home again Friday for an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader against St. John Fisher.
In Tuesday's first game, the Yellowjackets roughed up Nazareth starting pitcher
Carly Pike for seven runs in the first two innings. Brittany Grage hit a three-run homer in the first inning and Nina Korn hit a two-run blast in the second.
Danae Wetherbee relieved Pike in the second and she surrendered five more runs in the fourth inning with Gena Bradford connecting for a solo homer.
Grage was the winning pitcher as she scattered four singles and struck out five.
Sarah Cipperly went 2-for-2 for the Golden Flyers.
Liz Toner and
Meg DeMario also had hits.
The second game was a slugfest in the making, before rain forced postponement. Nazareth scored four times in the bottom of the first inning after the first two batters went down on strikes. Pike and
Shauna Bardanis each had run-scoring singles and
Sophia Rhoades had a two-run double. Those stats, however, will be wiped out.
