Monroe and Quicker Claim E8 Weekly Honors

Junior Chelsea Monroe of the Utica College softball team was named Empire 8 Player of the Week and Ithaca freshman Laura Quicker was named the Pitcher of the Week.

Monroe batted .429 and hit four home runs to help Utica to a 6-0 record last week, including back-to-back Empire 8 sweeps over Nazareth and St. John Fisher. In Empire 8 games, she had a .444 average with three home runs. Her biggest performance was against Fisher on April 14 where she went 4-for-6 on the day with two homers, including a two-run shot. On the week, Monroe scored six runs and totaled seven RBIs with a slugging percentage of 1.357.

On the season, she ranks second on the team with a .412 average.  She is tied for third in the conference with six home runs and has stolen seven bases. 

The Pioneers are now 18-8 overall including a 5-3 mark in the competitive Empire 8 Conference and presently sit in fourth place.  UC returns to the diamond Wednesday as it heads to Rochester, NY for a non-conference double header against the University of Rochester.  First pitch of game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Quicker appeared in two games in relief for Ithaca and earned two wins.  She had five strikeouts and didn't walk a single batter in her seven innings of work, while not allowing a single run. On April 9 the Bombers won a 6-5 game in nine innings against Cortland. Quicker pitched the final two innings allowing two hits with one strikeout. On April 14, Quicker and the Bombers blanked Nazareth 6-0 in the first game of a doubleheader. Quicker struck out four batters in five innings of play, allowing just one hit.

The Bombers return to action on Tuesday, April 16 hosting Oneonta for a double header at 3 p.m.
