Ithaca, Stevens, Houghton and Fisher Earn Wins
ITHACA v UTICA
The 20th-ranked Ithaca College men’s lacrosse team defeated host Utica, 15-4, Wednesday afternoon at Gaetano Stadium.
The Bombers blanked Utica 5-0 in the first period. Both squads netted one in the second for a 6-1 Ithaca edge at the half. Ithaca powered through the second half outscoring the Pioneers, 9-3, to improve to 3-1 in league play.
Sophomores Steve Danylyshyn and James Manilla tallied hat tricks to lead the Bombers. Juniors Joe Perkins and Jake Long scored a pair each, while five others recorded one apiece.
Junior Pat Slawta tied a career-high with four assists, while Long added two. Six others dished out one assist each.
Junior Brandon Henne won four faceoffs for the Bombers and sophomore Matt Greenblatt had three.
Ithaca led the shot count, 38-32, and ground balls, 32-25. The Pioneers won 14 of 22 faceoffs.
STEVENS v ELMIRA
The nationally ranked No. 6 Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team rolled to a 23-2 victory over Empire 8 Conference rival Elmira College on Wednesday afternoon at Elmira's Campus Field.
In the most lopsided triumph since 2011 for the Ducks, 16 different players recorded at least one point. In 2011, Stevens topped Utica College, 25-4, and Richard Stockton College, 26-3, in 2011, and allowed the least amount of goals in a contest since 2007. Six years ago, Stevens shutout Mount Saint Vincent College, 23-0, and dropped Centenary College, 22-1.
The Ducks jumped out to a 6-0 in the first quarter and never looked back, as they tallied six scores in the first, third and fourth quarters. Elmira netted its lone two goals of the game to end the first and third quarters, respectively.
HOUGHTON v WELLS
It was a tight, back and forth affair that played out between the Houghton Highlanders and the Wells College Express on Burke Field on Wednesday afternoon, but the home team managed to pull out the win, 12-11.
Houghton drew first blood, scoring twice within 10 seconds around the 10:00 mark in the first quarter. From that point on, it seemed that every time that the Highlanders tried to give themselves a cushion, the Express would have an answer: Houghton never led by more than two goals outside of a brief three goal lead by Houghton early in the fourth. Wells College only led once, a brief 3-2 lead in the first quarter, but just couldn’t add to that advantage
After the Express tied it up at 9-9 at 2:39 left in the third, Tyler Kempney went to work with three-straight goals at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarter. Wells scored twice late to pull within a goal and had a chance to tie in the final seconds but couldn't get a shot off.
Some stats that were in Houghton’s favor was the 56-38 advantage in groundballs and the 22-5 mark in faceoffs won.
FISHER v OSWEGO
St. John Fisher College's
Brett Farrell and
Jeff Wester combined for five goals and five assists as the men's lacrosse team picked up a 9-6 win over visiting SUNY Oswego on Wednesday afternoon.
With the game tied at 1-1 midway through the first half, the Cardinals scored three straight to take the lead for good. The Lakers chipped away at the lead, and made it 4-3 before
Michael Boisvert scored his second goal of the game with 5:23 left in the second quarter to make it 5-3. The Lakers scored again, but Fisher took a 6-4 lead at the half after
Kevin DeOrdio scored his fourth goal of the year with 2:41 left in the second.
The Lakers made it 6-5 in the second half, but Farrell forced a turnover and set up
Scott Campbell for his second goal of the year in the closing seconds of the third quarter to put Fisher back up two goals. Oswego made it a one-goal game 22 seconds into the fourth quarter, but could get any closer.
Wester scored an unassisted goal with 9:08 left in the game and six minutes later Farrell scored his fourth goal of the day with Wester record his fourth assist of the contest.
