Houghton Grabs 15-5 Win Over D'Youville

BATAVIA, N.Y. -- The Highlanders defeated D'Youville College 15-5 in baseball action Thursday at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia, N.Y.

Houghton fell behind 2-0 after an inning of play, but quickly righted the ship, scoring runs in six-straight innings.

In the second, after Jeremy Austin (Corning, NY, Corning East HS) reached on a single and Kameron Konert (Bolivar, NY, Bolivar-Richburg CS) walked, the two Highlander base runners executed a double steal on a Michael Knapp (Brockport, NY) strikeout. Christopher McKay (Oakville, ON, Canada) promplty drove them both home with a single to left center.

Michael Kerr (Hamburg, NY, Hamburg HS) hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the third, driving in Jacob Bannerman (Wasaga Beach, ON, Canada, Stayner Collegiate Institute)  who had reached base with a single to left field.

D'Youville added a run in the top of the fourth, before Houghton scored another in the bottom of the inning on a Konert RBI single. The bottom of the fifth saw the Highlanders score two more times, and the home team added five runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth. Bannerman tripled home Ignacio Villalobos (Brantford, ON, Canada, Assumption College School) and McKay, then scored on an error with Kerr at the plate. Kaiden Bowers (Brantford, ON, Canada, Assumption College School) reached on a single, then scored -- along with Kerr -- off a triple by Austin.

The Highlanders closed its scoring with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, while the Wildcats scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings.

Houghton batters tallied 13 hits, including two doubles, three triples and a homer. Bannerman finished 3-for-6 with two runs scored and two RBI. Kerr was 1-for-3 with four RBI and three runs. Patrick Parsons (Wellsboro, PA), Bowers and Austin each had two hits.

On the mound, three Highlander pitchers combined to allow just six Wildcat hits. Jonathan DeDell (Woodstock, VT) allowed two hits and two runs in two innings. Jacob Kocher (Caledonia, NY, Lima Christian School) pitched four innings, allowing one run on one hit, while striking out four, and Kyle Flemington (Burlington, ON, Canada, Nelson HS) closed it out with three hits and two runs in three innings of work.

The Highlanders (9-13) travel to Utica for a four-game series Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20.
