Ithaca Women's Track & Field Team Wins Outdoor Empire 8 Championship
The Ithaca College women's track & field team scored 268 points en route to winning its sixth straight Empire 8 Outdoor Track & Field Championship title on Saturday. The Bombers have won nine championships in the 10-year history of the sport in the conference.
Nazareth sophomore Hannah Brackley won the 200-meter and 400-meter dash events with times of :25.44 and :58.70, respectively. Both times are school and stadium records. She was named E8 Track Athlete off the Meet, while teammate Taylor Pierson was named E8 Field Athlete of the Meet. Pierson took the title in the long jump with a mark of 18 feet, 5 1/4 inches (5.62 meters).
Brackley was also a member of Nazareth's first-place 4 x 400-meter relay team that finished in 4:05.89 to qualify for the upcoming ECAC Championship meet in May. The Golden Flyers' 4 x 100-meter relay team recorded a second-place finish. Brackley, Pierson, sophomore Sibongile Chisi and Keaghlan Morrissey teamed to finish in :49.65.
Ithaca won the 4x100-meter relay with a meet-record time of 48.79 and was the runner-up in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:13.02.
Senior Jenn Randall clocked an ECAC-good 2:15.25 finish in the 800 run to win the event in a meet-record time. Sophomore Meghan Cass also met the ECAC qualifier in the 5K with a first-place finish of 18:36.44.
Senior Tammia Hubbard won the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.70. Sophomore Emilia Scheemaker won the triple jump with a meet-record distance of 11.47 meters and placed second with a mark of 5.36 meters in the long.
Junior Elaine Abdulky won the hammer throw with a toss of 44.89 meters and freshman Brooke Zimmerman won the javelin with a heave of 40.02 meters.
The Bombers had the top two finishers in the 3,000 steeplechase and the pole vault. Sophomore Emily Smith won the steeple with a time of 12:03.68. Freshman Opal Jessica Bogda followed in second in 12:16.15. Freshman Alex Rechen won the pole vault and junior Shannon Meehan placed second. Both cleared 3.13 meters.
Sophomore Alexa Rick won the 1,500 run with a time of 4:51.86. Classmate Leigh Martino won the 400 hurdles crossing the finish line in 1:06.36.
Other winners on the day included St. John Fisher's Paige Willson in the shot put with a distance of 11.40 meters and Alfred sophomore Miasia Hillman was the champion in the 100-mter dash, inning in 12.74 seconds.
Stevens Institute of Technology freshman Gladys Njoku and Alexandra Doyle each posted the top marks in the high jump and discus events. Njoku cleared 1.62 meters in the high jump, while Doyle threw the discus 35.23 meters.
