Hartwick Picks up 7-2 Win Over Utica

UTICA, NY – Hartwick men’s tennis picked up its first win of the season on Sunday with a 7-2 triumph over Utica College. It marks the Hawks’ sixteenth straight win over the Pioneers dating back to 2000. ’Wick is now 1-9 overall and 1-5 in the Empire 8. UC drops to 3-7 and 0-7.
The Hawks won five of six singles matches and two of three in doubles. Four of the five singles wins were in straight sets.
Sophomore
Will Gilbraith (West Monroe, NY/Paul V. Moore HS), freshman
Liam Brown (Suffield, CT/Suffield), and junior
Matt Behn (Windsor, NY/Windsor Central) each won for the first time in their college careers in singles play.
Gilbraith defeated Raphael Warnon in third singles 6-2, 6-2. Brown downed Daniel Fadden 6-3, 6-1 in the fourth flight. Behn evened his season record at 1-1 with a three-set, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win in sixth singles over Ryan Valle.
Gilbraith and Brown also teamed up for their first doubles victory. In second doubles, the duo defeated UC’s Warnon and Mike Zaloom, 8-3.
Peter Dumas (Albany, NY/Colonie HS) and
Brian Redder (Marion, NY/Williamson Central) also won in doubles, 8-5, over Fadden and Jon Gorman in the first flight. The Hartwick pair is now 4-5 on the season.
Dumas improved to 4-2 in the Empire 8 with a first singles win over Gorman, 6-1, 6-0. Redder evened his conference mark at 3-3 with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Zaloom in second singles.
The Hartwick Hawks will close out their season on Tuesday with a home contest against Ithaca College.
