Elmira and Ithaca Both Suffered a Loss on Tuesday Afternoon
Elmira 5, Fredonia 10
Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Women’s Lacrosse team put together a strong first half leading undefeated Fredonia 4-3 at halftime, but it was not enough as they fell, 10-5, Tuesday afternoon at Campus Field. The win improves the Blue Devils to 8-0, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 4-4.
Elmira got off to a great start winning the opening draw control as
Ashton Hogan ’15 found the back of the net on an unassisted goal just 42 seconds into the contest. The teams then traded three goals in the remainder of the opening half.
Marki Michaels ’13 beat the goaltender off a feed from
Hogan and then
Jessica Blinkinsop ’14 scored a goal to make it 3-2 with just less than 10 minutes remaining. After a Fredonia goal,
Gretchen Smith ’15 made a great play feeding
Laura Powell ’16 for her first collegiate goal as EC took a 4-3 edge into intermission.
The second half proved to be all Blue Devils as Fredonia rattled off seven straight scores from six different players to take a commanding 10-4 lead with just more than three minutes remaining. It was not until 53 seconds remaining in the second frame that the Soaring Eagles scored their first goal of the half when
Michaels assisted a
Hogan goal.
Fredonia held advantages in shots on goal (25-9), ground balls (33-22) and draw controls (9-8). Elmira turned the ball over 37 times which proved to be costly, while the Blue Devils gave away 25 possessions.
Mary Kate Gellerman ’13 stopped 15 shots for Elmira, while Casey Chiesa made four saves for Fredonia.
Hogan led Elmira with two goals, an assist and three draw controls, while
Michaels contributed a goal and assist. Katie Glagolev paced all scorers with three goals for the Blue Devils.
Laura Bartus ’13 had a strong game for EC finishing with four ground balls and four caused turnovers.
The Women’s Lacrosse team returns to action this weekend when it hosts a pair of Empire 8 conference foes on Campus Field in Elmira. The Soaring Eagles take on Stevens Institute of Technology Saturday at 12:00 p.m. and Hartwick College Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Ithaca 12, Union 13
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Senior
Tracy Rivas (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) erupted for seven goals, but it wasn't enough as the 13th-ranked Ithaca College women's lacrosse team (4-4) fell to Union (2-3), 13-12, Tuesday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field.
Ithaca led 6-2 at the half, but the Dutchwomen went on to outscore the Bombers 11-6 in the second half.
Rivas' seven goals ranks tied for 10th-most single-game goals in program history. She had twice previously netted six scores. Rivas increased her career tally to 207 points to sit tied for third most at Ithaca on 149 goals and 58 assists.
Rivas opened action with a hat trick in the first 16 minutes of play. Senior
Nikki Dahl (Columbus, Ohio/The Wellington School) scored a pair and Rivas netted her fourth to put the Bombers in front 6-0 with 2:45 lingering in the first. Union recorded back-to-back goals for a 6-2 game at intermission.
The teams exchanged three goals each early in the second stint with Ithaca owning a 9-5 lead at 24:33. The Dutchwomen scored two more to pull within 9-7, but the Bombers answered with a pair to reinstate a four-goal 11-7 gap at 16:20. Rivas erased a Union goal with her seventh at the nine-minute mark, but Union went on to score five unanswered in the final eight minutes of action to win its second of the season.
Ithaca led the shot count 30-24 and ground balls 22-18. Union won 20 draws to Ithaca's seven.
Dahl finished with a hat trick for Ithaca and a Bomber-best four ground balls. Senior
Michelle Avery(Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) had one goal and one assist, while
Kim Armbruster (Boonton, N.J./Montville) added a goal and freshman
Allison Runyon (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) an assist.
Senior
Jess Worthman (Commack, N.Y./Hauppauge) suffered the loss in goal having made three saves.
The Bombers return to action on Saturday, April 6 with a 1 p.m. Empire 8 game at Nazareth.
