Utica Opens up Spring with Solid Win

Oneida, NY (4-3-13) – The Utica College men’s tennis team remains undefeated as it downed non-conference rival Oswego State, 7-2, Wednesday afternoon at the Turning Stone Tennis Facility. Seniors Mike Zaloom and Sam Cotrupe along with junior Daniel Fadden and freshman Matt Rogers led the Pioneers to victory, while recording wins in singles competition.
UC improves to 2-0 while the Lakers fall to 1-4 overall on the early season. Oswego remains on the road as it heads to Amherst, NY Saturday to face Daemen College (12 p.m.) at the Romney Tennis Courts. The Pioneers continue their home stretch on Saturday as they open up Empire 8 Conference play against Elmira College. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. The Soaring Eagles are currently 2-1 overall and will take on conference foe Ithaca College (1-8 overall, 0-0 Empire 8) Thursday at home in Pine Valley, NY in their league opener.
After falling 1-6 in the first set, Zaloom battled back with convincing wins of 6-4 and 6-2 in the two spot. Fadden won his singles match by scores of 6-2 and 7-5 while Cotrupe (6-3, 7-6 (7-3)) and Rogers (7-5, 6-3) closed out individual play with back-to-back victories.
Sophomore Jon Gorman teamed up with Fadden in doubles to record an 8-6 victory in the first match while Zaloom partnered with freshman Raphael Warnon for an 8-2 defeat.
Cotrupe and Rogers sealed the win with a hard fight in the final match of doubles competition winning 9-7 to open up the spring season with a solid win.
