Ithaca, Hartwick, Fisher and Stevens Win on Saturday
Ithaca 11, Nazareth 9
The 13th-ranked Ithaca College women’s lacrosse team (5-4, 2-0 Empire 8) scored nine first-half goals en route to defeating host Nazareth (4-5, 1-1 Empire 8), 11-9, Saturday afternoon.
Senior Tracy Rivas, who scored seven goals for the Bombers on Tuesday, netted five to lead Ithaca to victory. Senior Kaitlyn Hoffay and freshman Allison Runyon each scored twice and seniors Kim Armbruster and Nikki Dahl had one apiece. Dahl and junior Becky Guzzo each dished out an assist.
The Golden Flyers netted the game’s first, but Rivas answered with a trio of her own in a five-minute span to put the Bombers ahead indefinitely. Nazareth scored its second at the 20-minute mark, but Hoffay and Runyon combined to score three straight for a 6-2 edge at 11:35. Nazareth made it a 6-4 game, but Rivas and Armbruster found the back of the net with free position shots and Dahl went unassisted for a 9-4 margin at the half.
Nazareth dominated the second stint, outscoring Ithaca, 5-2. The host team pulled within 10-8 at 16:07. Runyon scored at 13:16 to increase the gap to three. The Golden Flyers tallied once more to finalize all scoring at 11-9.
Hartwick 18, Alfred 12
Sophomore Emily Jweid, freshman Kia Ference, juniori Meg Luce and sophomore Lisa Littleton combined for 15 goals on Saturday as Hartwick's women's lacrosse team won its first Empire 8 game of the season, 18-12, over Alfred University.
The Hartwick offense, which totaled only 11 goals over the last two games, exploded for 18 on the day. The Hawks also tied a season-high with a team shooting percentage of 51% and were 6-of-10 on free-position shots in the game.
Jweid would pace the Hawks' attack with five goals and one assist. She would also grab a game-high nine draw controls. Ference added four scores with Luce and Littleton both tallying three times in the contest.
Hartwick improves to 4-5 on the season and 1-1 in the Empire 8 Conference. The Saxons fall to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in the league.
Fisher 13, Utica 4
The St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team opened the game with a 5-0 run and never looked back, as the Cardinals cruised to 13-4 win over visiting Utica College on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Fisher improves to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in the Empire 8 Conference, while the Pioneers, who are enjoying the best start to a season in their program's history, fall to 6-2, 1-1.
Fisher, currently one of three teams receiving votes in the national coaches poll, took the lead for good just 12 seconds into the game as senior All-American
Melissa Leonhard won the opening draw and took it to the goal, scoring her 31
st goal of the season.
Fisher scored the next four goals as well and didn't allow the Pioneers to score for the game's first 24 minutes. The Cardinals two more goals late in the first half, including a shot from
Emily Bryerton as the buzzer sounded to give Fisher the 7-1 lead at intermission.
Fisher extended its lead to 8-1 before Utica scored three of the next four goals to make it 9-4 with just over 10 minutes left. The Cardinals, however, scored four unanswered, including two in an 11-second span, to pull away.
Stevens 12, Elmira 6
Six different players scored goals and the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team notched seven of the eight tallies in the second half en route to a 12-6 victory over Elmira College Saturday afternoon at Campus Field.
With the win, Stevens moves to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in the Empire 8. Elmira drops to 0-2 in the conference and 4-5 overall.
After falling behind 4-0 12:12 into the game, Stevens roared back with five-straight tallies to take a 5-4 advantage with 6:16 to play in the half.
Elmira answered to tie the game at five with 3:22 in the first and that is how the score remained through intermission.
Stevens opened the second half scoring, finding the back of the net with 26:42 to play and giving the Ducks a lead they would never relinquish. The Ducks scored 3:28 later for a 7-5 advantage, and following an Elmira score, the Ducks closed the game with five-straight tallies to earn the 12-6 win.
Stevens ended the contest with a 34-17 margin in ground balls and a 28-16 margin in shots. Each team controlled 10 draws.
