Stevens' Waybright Gets 200th Career Point; Elmira, Ithaca and Nazareth Earn Wins

Stevens 16, Alfred 3
Senior midfielder Spencer Waybright became the sixth player in the program history to accumulate 200 points Sunday as the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s lacrosse team improved to 2-1 in the Empire 8 and 6-6 overall with a 16-3 rout of Alfred University.
 
Coming into the game, Waybright needed five points for 200 and ended with eight behind five goals and three assists. Her 200th came 15:59 into the game on a goal that gave the Ducks a 10-0 advantage.
 
Stevens dominated from the opening draw all the way through the final whistle, keeping Alfred off the scoreboard throughout the first 33:38 of the game. Waybright finished with five goals (on just six shots), three assists, one ground ball and one caused turnover.
 
Stevens ended the game with a 30-13 margin on shots and committed just eight turnovers. The Ducks converted all 11 of their clear attempts and held a slight 11-10 edge in draw controls. The Ducks also had a 14-13 advantage in ground balls.
 
Waybright opened the scoring 3:20 into the game as the Ducks lead swelled to 12-0 with 3:25 left in the first. The Saxons (3-3 overall, 0-3 Empire 8) scored early in the second and finished with three total tallies.
 
After dropping four-straight games, the Ducks have now won three in a row to even their record at 6-6 and are 2-1 in the conference.


Ithaca 15, St. John FIsher 9
The 13th-ranked Ithaca College women's lacrosse team (6-4, 3-0 Empire 8) won its second Empire 8 game in as many days with a 15-9 victory at St. John Fisher (8-3, 2-1 Empire 8) Sunday afternoon at Growney Stadium.

The Bombers powered to an 11-3 lead in the first half that propelled them to victory. The Cardinals outscored Ithaca 6-4 in the second.

The Cardinals netted the game's first before Ithaca took a 2-1 lead at 24:29. Fisher answered with two straight for a 3-2 edge, but the Bombers dominated the final 17 minutes of play. Ithaca scored nine unanswered to lead 11-3 at intermission.

Fisher tallied first in the second half as well, but the Bombers scored back-to-back for a nine-goal lead, 13-4, at 26:38. The host squad recorded four consecutive, but Ithaca answered with two of the last three goals for a 15-9 final.

St. John Fisher outshot Ithaca, 24-21, and held a 17-12 gap in ground balls. Ithaca won 15 draws to Fisher's 10.


Nazareth 12, Utica 5
Ten different players scored goals for host Nazareth Sunday as the Golden Flyers outscored Utica in an Empire 8 Conference women's lacrosse game, 12-5. The victory evened the Golden Flyers' overall record at 5-5 and boosted their conference record to 2-1. Utica is 6-3 overall and 1-2 in conference games.

The Golden Flyers were in control most of the way and never trailed as they led 4-2 at halftime and scored six straight times to open the second half to build the lead to 10-2.

Nazareth had a 30-21 advantage in shots. 


Elmira 13, Hartwick 10
The Elmira College Women's Lacrosse team finished the game scoring five unanswered goals to turn a 10-8 deficit into a 13-10 victory Sunday afternoon at Campus Field.  The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in Empire 8 play, while the loss drops the Hawks to 4-6 and 1-2.

Elmira was in control early on as it opened the contest with three straight goals in the first seven minutes. After two Hawk goals made it 3-2, Elmira answered right back.

The Soaring Eagles opened up a 6-4 lead within a 19 second span. However, 'Wick closed the half tallying three of the next four markers as the teams played to a 7-7 draw at intermission.

Hartwick scored three out of the first four goals out of halftime playing with increased intensity. Emily Jweid found the back of the net twice for 'Wick on the run. Jweid's score with 21:17 remaining in the game would be the last goal on the day for the Hawks as the Soaring Eagle defense tightened up, allowing the offense to score five unanswered times.

The contest was remarkably close as both teams had 20 shots on goal. Hartwick held minimal edges in ground balls (26-25) and draw controls (14-11). Elmira converted 80 percent of its free position shots going 4-for-5, while Hartwick went 5-for-9 on free position shot attempts.
