Regular Season Winds Down

STEVENS v OLD WESTBURY 
Senior catcher Clair Strom ended her collegiate career going 5-8 with three runs, three RBI and just missing hitting for the cycle in Game Two of a doubleheader split as the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team closed out its regular season at The SUNY College at Old Westbury on Tuesday afternoon.  The Ducks gave up an early lead in Game One to fall, 4-3, but closed out the season with a 10-7 win in Game Two.

Stevens ends the season with a 7-33 overall record while Old Westbury stays at .500 (17-17).
 

 NAZARETH v CORTLAND
Visiting Nazareth closed out its 2013 softball season with a non-conference doubleheader at Cortland. The Golden Flyers lost both games 1-0 and 10-2. Nazareth fell to 7-24 overall, while Cortland improved to 24-14.

Nazareth squandered a strong pitching performance by freshman Danae Wetherbee in the first game as she allowed only an unearned run to the Red Dragons in the third inning and  yielded only six hits. 

In the second game, Cortland scored twice in the first and third innings, but Nazareth rallied for two runs in the fifth. Cortland broke the game open with six runs in te sixth inning to invoke the mercy rule. A grand slam by Lucia Meola was the big blow.


ITHACA v KEUKA
The Ithaca College softball team (25-13) improved its winning streak to six games with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Keuka (15-11) on Tuesday afternoon at Kostrinsky Field. The Bomber pitchers combined to total 20 strikeouts over the two games – 10 in each contest, which were season-highs for each. The Bombers conclude their regular season Wednesday at Rochester, with a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.


ALFRED v PITT-BRADFORD
The Alfred University softball team rallied from two runs down in the sixth inning before claiming a 6-3 extra-inning win to complete a doubleheader sweep of host Pitt-Bradford Tuesday afternoon. The Saxons won the first game, 13-5, in six innings.

In the opener, Alfred led 10-0 before the hosts scored five in the bottom of the fifth. The Saxons plated three in the top of the sixth, then held Pitt-Bradford scoreless in the bottom of the inning to take the run-rule victory.

In the second game, Alfred (21-15) trailed 2-0 after five innings before plating the tying runs in the top of the sixth. After AU went ahead with a run in the top of the seventh, Pitt-Bradford tied the game with a run in the bottom of the frame. The Saxons scored three in the top of the eighth on a three-run homerun by junior outfielder Samijo Scheer, then shut down the Panthers to secure the win.


UTICA v UNION
The Utica College softball team moved its win streak to five games as it swept Union College, 5-2 and 10-0 (5 innings), in the final home game of the regular season. 

In the first game, Utica used a four-run second inning to pull ahead.  Although Union was able to score to score two in the fourth.

In the second game, the Pioneers continued their hot streak at the plate as they tallied 11 hits and ten runs in four innings.
