E8 Teams go 5-1 on May 1
STEVENS v JERSEY CITY
The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team capped off its 2013 regular season with a 2-1 win over New Jersey City University at home on Wednesday night to finish with a 23-17 overall record. Hits came at a premium in the contest, as both teams combined for five hits, and two of the three runs in the ballgame were scored without a hit recorded in each inning.
Sophomore starter Peirce Marston
earned the victory in 8.1 innings pitched and struck out five batters. Marston allowed just three hits with two walks for his third win of the season and second straight 8-plus-inning outing. He allowed a run in the first inning after a leadoff walk and no hits in the frame.
In all, both teams were retired in order a total of six times in the nine-inning affair.
The Ducks will wait and see if they earn a bid to the ECAC Metro Tournament at the beginning of next week for a chance to tie last season’s win total of 24. The ECAC Tournament will get underway May 8.
Stevens needs just one strikeout as a pitching staff to eclipse 300 on the season. The staff currently ranks seventh in Division III in strikeouts per nine innings and would be just one of five schools to reach that total.
UTICA v CANTON
Seniors
Chris Podlucky and
Nick Dunbar guided the Utica College baseball team to a midweek split against SUNY-Canton Wednesday as the duo combined for three hits, three RBI and two runs scored. UC took game one 6-1 before falling short in the second game, 4-2. Podlucky and Dunbar drove in three runs on a mirror 2-for-3 at the plate while sophomore
Vincent Burillo aided three hits including a double, one run, one RBI and one stolen base in the game one victory. Freshman
Joshua Webb recorded his first collegiate win on the mound with a complete game, one-run outing.
ITHACA v ST. LAWRENCE
The 15th-ranked Ithaca College baseball team (32-6) won its fifth game in five days, all at home, with a 15-5 victory over St. Lawrence (17-14) on Wednesday afternoon at Freeman Field. The Bombers scored three runs in each of four different innings and scored at least one run in six of the eight innings in which they batted. Ithaca's 15 runs matched its second-highest total of the season and the Bombers totaled 29 runs over the last two games.
ST. JOHN FISHER v RIT
The St. John Fisher College baseball team won both games, 8-4 and 2-0, against Rochester Institute of Technology in a doubleheader on Wednesday night at Colburn Park in Newark, NY.
In the first game, Fisher exploded for six runs in the sixth inning to gain a four-run advantage over the Tigers. The Cardinals used a hit by pitch to lead off the inning as
Sean Osterman reached base. Osterman moved over to third when the third baseman tried to get him on a fielder's choice but sailed the ball into right field.
Ben Webbpinch hit after
Brad Rush popped out and singled to center field to drive in Osterman.
After another fielder's choice, this time with RIT getting an unassisted out at third, Fisher scored five runs with two out.
Mike Roman singled to center next, scoring pinch runner
Bryant Moore.
Dave VanGorder then pinch hit and worked a walk to load the bases.
Ben Bostick came up next and fought a pitch into right field to drive in
Shane Barley and Roman.
Chris Roeder then scored on an infield single to the third baseman that scored pinch runner Parker Roos. The inning then finished where it started, with Osterman driving in the final Cardinals' run of the winning with an RBI single to score Bostick.
Osterman drove in Fisher's second run of the game in the third inning with a sacrifice fly that again scored his classmate Bostick.
The Cardinals first run came in the second inning, this coming on a two-out double from Barley down the left field line to score Rush.
Thomas Dybas pitched a four-hit shutout, cruising past RIT in game two of the doubleheader. The hard-throwing righty took a no-hitter through two outs in the fourth before finally surrendering a base knock. Dybas fanned five batters on his way to his second victory.
Fisher got the only runs it would need in the fifth when Barley worked a walk and a single by
Mike Fahy went through the wickets of the left fielder all the way to the wall. Barley was able to score on the play while Fahy advanced to third with the two-base error. Roman then drove in Fahy during the next at-bat with a single of his own.
Roman led the Cardinals with two hits and their only RBI while Fahy, Roeder and Osterman all finished with hits, Roeder's being a double.
