Elmira Stays Alive with 3-2 Win in 10 Innings; Alfred Elminated
Elmira College came back from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 in ten innings against Alfred University to stay alive in the Empire 8 Softball Tournament. Elmira will face the loser of the Utica/St. John Fisher game on Saturday at 11am. Alfred University has been eliminated and completes its season at 23-17.
In the 12th inning junior Katie Dore singled to left field with one out and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mikayla Bean. Senior Alex Andrade singled to left field to score Dore for the winning run.
Alfred had runners on base in the 12th inning for a chance to extend or end the game but the Soaring Eagle defense held strong. Junior Samijo Scheer singled to left to start the bottom of the inning and then Alyson Hampton was entered as a pinch runner and stole second. With one out, Alison Wickwire flew out to right field moving Hampton to third. Rachel Guszick drew a walk to put runners on the corners with two outs but Elmira’s ace in the circle, Alex Puglisi, struck out the final batter to end the game.
Alfred scored its two runs of the game in the second inning. Nichole Maher started the inning with a walk followed by Maressa Mistretta who reached on an error and advanced to third, while Maher scored. MIstretta scored one play later on a passed ball for a 2-0 lead.
Elmira freshman Ashley Palmer tied the game in the sixth inning with a two-out homerun to left field, scoring Andrede who singled the play before.
Puglisi finished with 10 strikeouts as she scattered three hits and three walks.
Jessica O’Sullivan took the loss in the circle as she allowed 10 hits and one walk while striking out six.
