Ithaca Men's Tennis Advances To E8 Championship With 5-3 Win Over Nazareth
HOBOKEN, N.J. - The Ithaca College men's tennis team won two of three doubles matches and then posted three singles victories in a 5-3 win over Nazareth in the semifinal round of the Empire 8 Men's Tennis Championships. The Bombers advance to Sunday's championship match at 11 a.m. against top-seeded and tournament host Stevens Institute of Technology.
The Bombers started with doubles wins by the first doubles team of David Andersen and Chris Hayes by an 8-3 score, and Ithaca also won the second match off of the courts as Griffin Reid and Derryk Williams were 8-4 winners at third doubles, and the Bombers held a 2-1 lead after doubles play wrapped up.
The Golden Flyers evened the team score with a win at second singles, but the Bombers won the next two matches to finish as Hayes won 6-2, 6-1 at third singles and Andersen was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at fourth singles. Nazareth won at first singles, and the Bombers clinched the team victory with Derryk Williams' 6-2, 6-3 win at sixth singles. The fifth singles match was unfinished once the team victory was secured.
It was the second time this season that the Bombers defeated Nazareth in dual-match competition. Ithaca will face Stevens, who is ranked eighth in the Northeast Region by the Intercolegiate Tennis Association, in the championship match on Sunday.
