Stevens Institute of Technology men’s tennis freshman Matthew Heinrich has been named the Empire 8 Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week for the final week of the spring.

Heinrich was named the Most Valuable Player after posting victories in all four of his matches between first doubles and singles at the Empire 8 Men’s Tennis Championship this past weekend.  The rookie teamed with senior Chris Rosensteel to post 8-2 and 8-1 wins over St. John Fisher College and Ithaca College and swept both his singles match, 6-0, 6-0 to cap a spectacular first year.  He heads into the NCAA Division III Tennis Championship with a 23-5 overall record, including a 9-1 mark since moving up to first singles.

The honor is the team’s fifth of the season, as senior Shota Tasaki was also recognized twice.

Head Coach Steve Gachko will lead Heinrich and the Ducks (15-7) against Baruch College (12-4) in the First Round of the NCAA Championship on Friday at Amherst College in Amherst, Mass.
