CAMDEN, N.J. (May 8, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team saw its season end with a 2-0 setback to Rutgers-Camden University in the first round of the ECAC Metro Tournament at Campbell’s Field in Camden, N.J. Stevens, the No. 4 seed and home team in the game, had to travel to southwest New Jersey due to the NCAA lacrosse game in Hoboken on Wednesday night.
The Ducks (23-18) come up one victory short of last year’s mark of a 24-18 record, but held the Scarlet Raptors scoreless until the top of the ninth inning. In the ninth, Camden used a one-out triple to start off the rally and used a double and single in three straight at bats to account for the two runs. The triple was nearly snagged by senior
Michael Donovan (Frisco, Texas) at first base but the liner grazed off Donovan’s glove and rolled into the rightfield corner.
Senior
Tyler Courter (Glenwood, N.J.) put together the best all-around game for Stevens with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate and tossed seven innings on the mound in a no decision. Courter struck out six batters and gave up just two hits before coming out of the game for junior
Mark Poinsett (Ocean Gate, N.J.).
Poinsett threw a scoreless eighth inning but gave up four hits in the ninth inning to suffer the loss.
Rutgers-Camden starter Adam Satanoff earned his 10th win of the season in a complete game showing with seven strikeouts. Satanoff scattered five hits and walked just two batters.
Stevens’ best chance to plate a run came in the bottom of the eighth with two outs. Sophomore
Marc Calleo (Bayville, N.J.) singled and then freshman
Jonathan Toro (Sanford, Fla.) walked to put two runners on. Junior
Curt Lowenstein (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) stepped to the plate with a chance to drive in Calleo but flew out to rightfield.
The Ducks set a new school record this season with 305 strikeouts as a pitching staff, surpassing last year’s mark of 248. Stevens also set a new standard in fielding percentage at .973, which also topped the 2012 team that posted a percentage of .963.
Individually, junior
Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) posted the fourth-most runs batted in with 40 and recorded the fifth-best single season doubles mark with 13. On the mound, Allen saved six games which is good for second in one year.
Sophomore
Gregg Nickels (Simpsonville, S.C.) and freshman
Nicholas Sieber (Shrewsbury, Mass.) both landed in the second slot with seven sacrifices this season.
