WINDSOR, Conn. (May 9, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men’s tennis team swept Baruch College, 5-0, in the First Round of the NCAA Championship on Thursday morning.  The Ducks will advance to their fourth straight Second Round, where they will face No. 22 University of Mary Washington tomorrow, Friday, May 10 at 9 a.m. in Amherst, Mass.

Stevens improves to 16-7 overall this year while Baruch ends its season at 13-5.

The Ducks swept through doubles play to lead 3-0 heading into the singles matches. Freshman Matthew Heinrich (Hendersonville, Tenn.) and senior Chris Rosensteel (East Windsor, N.J.) – who will play at the NCAA Individual Championship in two weeks – took an early 4-0 lead at first doubles while freshman Tyler Tisdale (Grapevine, Texas) and senior Derek Smith (Boise, Idaho) stayed on serve at 4-3 at third doubles, but freshman Ben Foran (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) and senior Shota Tasaki (Greenwich, Conn.) fell behind early at twos, 1-3. Tisdale and Smith surged ahead to take third doubles, 8-3, and were followed shortly by Heinrich and Rosensteel’s 8-1 victory at ones.  Meanwhile, Foran and Tasaki recovered to record back-to-back breaks and held on to win, 8-4.

Stevens made short work of the singles matches as all four courts took one-set leads, with first through third singles locking up 6-1 wins while Foran won 6-2 at #4.  Rosensteel sprinted to a 6-0 victory in the second set to put Stevens within one point of clinching the match, which Foran did with a 6-2 win at #4.  Heinrich was up 4-1 in the second set at #1 and Tasaki led 4-3 at #3 when play was halted.

Head Coach Steve Gachko and the Ducks will move on to face No. 22 Mary Washington University (14-10) tomorrow, Friday, May 10 at 9 a.m. on the outdoor courts at Amherst College in Amherst, Mass., pending weather conditions.  A full preview of the match will be available later today.  The match will be available to view via LiveStats through this link.  Be sure to follow our live Twitter accounts as well: @StevensDucks and @Ducks_Tennis, and "Like" us on Facebook at StevensAthletics and Stevens Men's Tennis.
