HOBOKEN, N.J. (June 21, 2013) – Freshman
Amy Regan (Green Brook, N.J.) of the Stevens Institute of Technology women's track and field team travelled to Des Moines, Iowa for the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field National Championships on Thursday and participated in the 5,000-meter run at Drake University.
Regan took fifth overall with a time of 17:25.63 and edged out Camille Blackman of Northwestern University by .03 seconds. She went into the race with the fourth fastest declared time of 17:03.41 in the 5K and competed against 14 other runners – 10 of which were from NCAA Division I institutions. William & Mary College's Emily Stites won the event with a time of 16:13.77, while Megan Lacy of Stanford University took second in a time of 17:01.38.
"This was an incredible opportunity for Amy to experience the next level of racing. As always, she ran a hard, tough race against a very competitive field." said head coach
Justin Wood.
"The hot and humid conditions were definitely a factor in race times on Thursday night. I could see the field struggling to maintain after the halfway mark resulting in finish times well off everyone's personal bests."
"I was proud to see Stevens represented on the starting line at a USA National Championship. With the 2013 track and field season officially over I'm excited for what the future holds for our athletes and program!"
The Green Brook, N.J. native recorded one of the most successful campaigns throughout all three seasons (cross country, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field) at Stevens in 2012-13. Regan claimed the Empire 8 Conference Runner and Rookie of the Year during the fall after a first place showing in the championship meet in November. She would go on to place ninth of 277 runners in the NCAA Atlantic Regional meet and qualified for the NCAA Championship where she finished 40th overall. All four feats that Regan accomplished during the fall were firsts in Stevens cross country history.
During the indoor season, Regan won the Empire 8 crown in the mile and ran a leg on the first place distance medley relay team. In the spring, she place second at Empire 8's in the 1,500 and narrowly missed All-America recognition at NCAAs with a 10th place showing in the 5K.
The entire meet runs five days from June 19th to the 23rd.
