Elmira, NY -- Elmira College has announced today that the EC baseball team will play their home games at Dunn Field. The Elmira City Council passed a resolution to permit the Elmira College baseball team to practice and play at Dunn Field beginning in their inaugural season, which is slated for the 2014-15 academic year. "The Dunn Field agreement with the City of Elmira, checks a very important box on the list to implement our program" said Vice President of Athletics Pat Thompson. "Coach Paluga has already joined the staff, recruiting is in progress, and coordinating our premier baseball schedule is underway. Elmira College appreciates this opportunity and we are exited the Soaring Eagles now have an outstanding facility to call home."
"It is an exciting opportunity for the Elmira baseball team to have Dunn Field as its home" raved Elmira College head baseball coach
Corey Paluga. "The history and nostalgia of Dunn Field, along with the great playing surface, makes it one of the best home venues for baseball in the New York Region."
Built in 1938, Dunn Field is located on the Southside of the city of Elmira and is one of the best vintage baseball fields in the northeast with a great baseball history. Dunn Field serves as the home for the Elmira Pioneers, which used to have Major League Baseball (MLB) affiliations with teams such as the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, Brooklyn Dodgers, Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers, Florida Marlins, Kansas City Royals, Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres, St. Louis Browns, and the Washington Senators.
"We are very thankful for the generosity of the city of Elmira and the Pioneers, and we hope that this partnership continues to get stronger through the years" Paluga said. ""We look forward to adding a few more months of baseball to Dunn Field for the community to enjoy like it does during the summer months."
Dunn Field has a rich tradition of fielding many notable players and managers throughout the years. MLB Hall of Famer Earl Weaver coached at Dunn Field in the early 1960's; Long-time major league manager Lou Pinella played there in 1965, hitting three home runs in a single game; MLB Hall of Fame third baseman Wade Boggs played at Dunn Field during his time with Red Sox; 2001 MLB World Series MVP, Curt Schilling stood atop the mound at Dunn Field during his minor league days; former New York Yankee bench coach Don Zimmer got married at home plate at Dunn Field in 1951.
