2012-13 AVCA Team Academic Award

LEXINGTON, Ky. –
The Elmira College and St. John Fisher College women's volleyball teams were two of 622 programs to earn the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2012-13 academic year, as announced by the AVCA.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

Elmira went 23-13 overall in 2012 and made their third consecutive trip to the Empire 8 postseason tournament and second straight to the ECAC Metro-Upstate Championship match. 

The young Fisher squad (no-seniors and three juniors) won four of its last six matches in 2012 to finish 8-20 on the season.

A total of 93 NCAA Division III women's volleyball teams earned the distinction, accounting for nearly 15 percent of the overall total of honorees.

Elmira kicks of its 2013 campagin with an away match against the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford on September 4th. Following that match, the Soaring Eagles return home to Speidel Gymnasium to host the Elmira College Invitational on September 6th and 7th. 

During the weekend of August 30th, the Cardinals will begin their journey with at the RWU Invitational held by Roger Williams University. Fisher will play Roger Williams and SUNY Plattsburgh on Saturday before returning to action on Sunday with contests against Rhode Island College and Babson College.
