Fisher, Ithaca and W&J Start Season Off with a Win

The 2013 field hockey season officially began on Friday with five Empire 8 teams in action. Ithaca, St. John Fisher and Washington and Jefferson each earned a victory, while Stevens lost in overtime and Houghton was held scoreless. 

St. John Fisher 3, Susquehanna 0 (Box Score)
The St. John Fisher College field hockey team posted a victory in its season-opener after blanking host Susquehanna University 3-0 Friday afternoon in the opening round of the Connie Harnum Classic.
Danielle Famolaro came up big in goal for Fisher as the sophomore turned away the 10 shots she faced.

Washington & Jefferson 5, Kenyon 3 (Box Score)

Washington & Jefferson College junior midfielder Gina Taglieri scored two goals and assisted on another as the Presidents earned a 5-3 season-opening field hockey victory over Kenyon Friday night at Cameron Stadium.
The Presidents, who scored four times on their five penalty corners, fought back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to record the program’s seventh-straight win in a season opener.  The last time W&J began the season with a loss was in 2006 (5-0 at Juniata).

Ithaca 8, Wells 0 (Box Score)
The Ithaca College field hockey team (1-0) opened the 2013 season with an impressive win Friday evening, defeating the Wells Express (0-1) by a score of 8-0 at Higgins Stadium. Ithaca's eight-goal output marked the first time since an 8-1 win over Morrisville on Sept. 1, 2012 that the Bombers have scored eight goals in a contest.

Messiah 2, Stevens 1 (OT) (Box Score)
Stevens Institute of Technology gave eighth-ranked Messiah College all it could handle in a non-conference field hockey game Friday, finally succumbing, 2-1 in overtime at the De Baun Athletic Complex in each team's season-opener.

Fairleigh Dickinson 2, Houghton 0 (Box Score)
The Highlanders field hockey team opened the 2013 season with a 2-0 road loss to Fairleigh Dickinson University on Friday night.
