Stevens v Geneseo
The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team tallied its 10th consecutive victory to start the season with a 3-1 victory over SUNY Geneseo on Friday night in Canavan Arena. 

Stevens started slowly to open the evening with a 25-22 setback in set one, but responded with wins in the final three sets, 25-21, 25-12, 25-19, to defeat Geneseo (4-5). In the match, Stevens hit .239 as a team to just .110 for the Knights. The Ducks also held an edge in blocks with 8.5 to five, and also recorded eight service aces.

Freshman Christina Sciarra paced Stevens with 15 points on 13 kills and four block assists. Sciarra hit .367 in the showdown with just two errors in 30 swings. Senior Mary Caulson was close behind with 14.5 points on the evening. Caulson registered 11 kills, five digs and two aces.

Freshman Mary Tobin and junior Katie Hall also eclipsed double-digit points with 13.5 and 12.5, respectively. Tobin put down 12 kills to go along with 12 digs, while Hall posted seven kills, seven blocks, three digs and two aces.

The Ducks' offense ran through senior Samantha Gates, who handed out a match-best 48 assists. Gates also pitched in 10 digs and three aces. On the defensive end, junior Kirsten Salmins re-established her career high in digs with 30. Sophomore Annemarie Thomas rounded out the night for Stevens with nine kills.


Elmira v Farmingdale | Ramapo
The Elmira College women's volleyball team (5-0) picked up two more non-conference wins as they traveled to Ramapo College to participate in the Roadrunner Invitational where they competed against Farmingdale State College and Ramapo College.

Elmira kicked off the two-day tournament by taking on Farmingdale, where they took control early as they won in just three sets (25-13, 25-21, 25-12). Kiersten Derr and Ashley Heiman led the EC women offensively as they combined to collect a total of 11 kills as Catherine Miller collected five digs to lead the defensive side.

The Purple and Gold carried the momentum into the second game as defeated Ramapo in three sets (25-17, 25-19, 25-15), and allowed no more than 19 points. Taryn Rumsey led the charge as she recorded 16 kills and five aces, while Derr posted 12 kills. Sami Hanes helped the offense by pitching in 33 assists in the win. On defense, Miller recorded 21 digs while Heiman posted four solo blocks.


St. John Fisher v Rochester | Fredonia
It took five sets, but the St. John Fisher College volleyball team earned wins against the University of Rochester (25-21, 13-25, 25-18, 19-25, 15-10) and SUNY Fredonia (25-17, 22-25, 18-25, 25-18. 15-11) in the RIT Invitational, Friday at Clark Gymnasium.

Against Rochester, Megan Miller had a team-high 12 kills to go along with 11 digs.  Rachael Kline chipped in with 11 kills while Erica Stickler had 20 assists.  Ali Mann tallied 12 assists and Lauren Rokjer notched eight kills.

In the nightcap, Kline clubbed 13 kills and registered five service aces, while Miller put down 11 kills to go along with 13 digs.  Stickler had a team-high 25 assists and Brooke Meader had nine kills.  The Cardinals tallied 81 kills in the match as Jessica Simonetti collected 16 and Erin Crandall had 14. 


Ithaca v Mt. St. Mary | New Paltz
The Ithaca College volleyball team (4-6) blanked Mount Saint Mary College (N.Y.) (2-7) in straight sets, 3-0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-22), before falling to host New Paltz (7-3), 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-22), Friday evening on day one of the 11th Annual Hawks Invitational.

Against the Knights, Ithaca was led by junior Rylie Bean with 12 kills and senior Justine Duryea added nine. Sophomore Carly Garone set for 24 assists and freshman Molly Brown chipped in eight. Sophomore Dylan Gawinski Stern dug out 18 times for the Bombers and Duryea did so nine times.

In the day's second match, rookie Shaelynn Schmidt paced the Bomber offense hitting .425 with 19 kills and just two errors on 40 swings. Garone set for 20 assists and Brown eight. Garone and freshman Maggie Mutschler served up a trio of aces each. Defensively, Gawinski Stern dug out 12 times and Bean posted four blocks (1 solo, 3 assists).


Nazareth v Skidmore | Oneonta 
Nazareth won two more women's volleyball matches Friday at the Union Tournament. The Golden Flyers went four sets each with Skidmore and Oneonta and came away as winners. Nazareth overcame an early deficit to rally past Skidmore Scores were 18-25, 30-28, 25-18, 25-21. Nazareth then defeated Oneonta by scores of 25-19, 25-18, 20-25, 25-18.  

Four Nazareth players produced double-digit kill totals, led by junior Maria Allocco, who had 14 kills against just one hitting error in 22 attempts for a .591 hitting percentage. Freshman Cady Messmer and junior Chelsea Beecher each had 13 kills and junior Kassandra Buseck had 10. Freshman Maureen Thayer amassed 40 assists with 14 digs and freshman Madi Wickens had 22 digs with 10 assists.

Against Oneonta, Beecher, Buseck and Messmer each had 13 kills as Nazareth gained control early. Wickens had 42 assists and Thayer contributed 21 digs.

Buseck had five kills in the opening set and  Beecher added five in the second as the Golden Flyers built a commanding advantage. In the fourth set, Allocco, Beecher and freshman Sarah McMahon each had three kills


Utica v Wells | St. Lawrence
The Utica College volleyball team split a pair of games at the Oswego State Tournament Friday evening.  UC topped Wells College 3-0, before falling to St. Lawrence University 3-1.

After a close first set (28-26) against Wells, Utica took the second one 25-12, before downing the Express 25-23 in the third set.  Junior Briona Enny had 21 digs and Alexis Lyon chipped in with 13 digs of her own. 

Freshman Brandi Blaszak led the team with ten kills and added five aces, while Madison Bayer had eight kills and four aces, and Laura Homer-Gunther had seven kills.  Lora Allen  had a team-high 18 assists and Carly Lonczak helped out with 11 assists.  Allen also recorded 10 service aces in the match. 

In the second match of the evening, the Pioneers fell to St. Lawrence 26-24, and 25-18 in the first two sets, before winning the third set 26-24 to stay alive.  However, it wasn't enough as the Saints took the fourth set 25-10.

Bayer led the way for UC with ten kills and had six digs, while Blaszak had seven kills.  Enny added ten digs and Allen collected 14 assists. 


Hartwick v Cortland | Union
Hartwick squared off against Cortland and the host Dutchwomen at the Union College Invitational on Friday, but fell in both matches. The Hawks lost in three games to the Red Dragons, 22-25, 9-25, 15-25. They dropped a three-game match to Union in the nightcap, 9-25, 14-25, 24-16.

Sophomore outside hitter Hannah Strom led Hartwick against Cortland with seven kills in the match with classmate Mary Beth DeCuyke contributing five. Strom also accumulated 14 digs and Dana Martin and Christina Vitale added 10 apiece.

Martin had seven of the Hawks' 17 kills in the Union match. Quincy Kinzel registered 10 assists for the second straight match and Martin (16), Vitale (11), and Strom (10) combined for 37 digs.
