Elmira v St. Joseph's | Mt. Aloysi
The Elmira College women's volleyball team (7-0) finished the weekend off strong as they upped their win streak to seven. EC competed in day-two of the Roadrunner Invitational at Ramapo College, where they defeated St. Joseph's 3-0 (25-7, 25-22, 32-30) and Mt. Aloysi 3-1 (26-17, 23-25, 25-18, 25-18).

The Purple and Gold started the first set out strong as they held St. Joes to only seven points. The second set, the EC women won by only three points, and the third set was the closest as EC had to score 32 points to close out the SJC Golden Eagles. Taryn Rumsey and Kierstin Deer put up 20 kills, while Sami Hanes helped the offense by producing 28 assists. On the defensive side Derr and Catherine Miller combined to post 22 digs while Ashley Heiman notched in five block assists in the first win of the day.

The Soaring Eagles finished the two-day tournament off strong as they won in four sets, and not allowing more than 18 points in every set they won. Rumsey and Day led of the offense as they combined to take a total of 32 kills. Hanes was there to help set them up as she notched a total of 47 assists, and on defense Miller posted 14 digs and Day posted five blocks, with three being solo blocks.


Houghton v Hilbert | Alfred
The Houghton volleyball team went right to work defeating Hilbert College 3-0 on Saturday.  The Highlanders then continued their streak by sweeping Alfred University 3-0 in the second match.

The offensive and defensive strength was seen from numerous players in the first match against Hilbert. Both Hattie Burgher and Jaime Green had a double-double, as well as 10 digs each.  Hannah Compeau had 13 digs, and Laurel Wroblicky led the way with 20 digs.

Burgher contributed offensively with 10 kills, Compeau with 9 kills, Meagan Palm and Alicia Needham  with 7 kills each, and Green had 30 assists.

The team's display of aggressive serving was supported by the efforts of Jaclyn Algier with 10 kills, Compeau with 8 kills and 4 aces, Burgher with 7 kills, and Palm with 6 kills and 6 aces.
 
On the defensive end against the Alfred University Saxons, Wroblicky recorded 11 digs, Compeau  10 with digs, Burgher with 9 digs, and Green with 7 digs; allowing for only minimal scoring for the Saxons.


Stevens v FDU-Florham | Kean 
The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team completed a perfect weekend at the 2013 Ducks Classic in Canavan Arena on Saturday afternoon with victories over FDU-Florham and Kean University. Stevens pushes its record to 12-0 on the season and only dropped two sets this weekend.

The Ducks swept FDU in their first match of the day, 25-16, 25-16, 25-22. Stevens defeated the Devils earlier this season in four sets and were led in this match by freshman Mary Tobin who tallied a match-best 16 kills on 41 attempts with seven digs and three assists.

Stevens hit .291 in the match and committed just 12 hitting errors. The team also combined for seven total blocks and four aces. In sets one and two, the Ducks hit .333 and .448, respectively.

In a battle of undefeated teams, Stevens took down Kean (8-1), 26-24, 23-25, 25-17, 25-19, in the final match of the tournament. The Ducks capitalized in the match on 11 aces and 14 service errors from the Cougars and also recorded nine more kills than Kean (51 to 42).

Tobin led all players with 15 kills en route to being named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. She also recorded eight digs, and in the three matches, Tobin tallied 43 kills and 27 digs over 11 sets.


St. John Fisher v Keuka | Brockport
The St. John Fisher College volleyball stretched its winning streak to four straight games Saturday morning before falling to Brockport its final game at the RIT Invitational.

The Cardinals dueled Keuka College in the opening game, taking the first and seconds sets (25-16, 25-18) along with the fourth and deciding set 25-18.

The Cardinals received contributions from several players including Brooke Meader who tallied eight kills and Megan Miller who smashed nine kills to go along with 13 digs and an ace.  Rachel Kline had a team-high 11 kills and a .346 hitting percentage.  Ali Mann had 14 assists and Erica Stickler recorded 20 assists.

In the second game, the Cardinals were bested by the College of Brockport 3-0 (23-25, 17-25, 13-25).

Kline led Fisher with seven kills.  Jessica Simonetti had 10 digs in the game and Paige Willson registered four kills.


Ithaca v Salisbury | Old Westbury
The Ithaca College volleyball team (5-7) battled 21st-ranked Salisbury (11-1) and blanked Old Westbury (1-4) on day two of the New Paltz Hawk Invitational. The Sea Gulls took the first match in straight sets, 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-20), but the Bombers answered with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-6, 25-11) victory over the Panthers.

Salisbury used an 8-3 run in the first set for an 18-11 advantage. The Bombers snuck within 22-20, but the Gulls posted three consecutive for the 1-0 lead. Ithaca answered with an early lead in the second stint, 9-4. Salisbury rewrote its deficit with a dominating 17-3 run en route to a 25-17 victory. Ithaca battled in the third. There were four ties, but the Gulls snapped a 9-9 deadlock with 11 of the next 14 points. The Bombers held Salisbury at match point as they put away four points on Idziur's serve, but an attack error finalized all play in the Sea Gulls' favor, 25-20.

Ithaca took a 5-1 lead in the first, but Old Westbury responded to pull within 10-8. The Bombers held the Panthers to three additional points, meanwhile putting away 15 of their own. A 9-0 run to open the second frame helped Ithaca power to a 25-6 win. In the final set, the Panthers initially kept within striking distance, but Ithaca closed out the match with a 13-2 stretch for the win.


Nazareth v Cortland | Union
On the second day of the Union Invitational, the Golden Flyerssplit a pair of hard-fought women's volleyball matches. The Golden Flyers defeated Cortland in their first match by scores of 25-19, 22-25, 25-16, 25-18, then lost to host Union in five sets 25-19, 22-25, 21-25, 25-15, 15-13.

Nazareth completed a 3-1 weekend with a 10-3 overall record. Freshman Cady Messmer represented the Golden Flyers on the all-tournament team.

In the Cortland match, Nazareth recorded its first win over the Red Dragons since 2009 as junior Chelsea Beecher and classmate Maria Allocco recorded 16 kills and 15 kills, respectively, to lead Nazareth's efficient offensive attack. Beecher and Allocco had just six total hitting errors between them.

In addition to the 31 total kills from Beecher and Allocco, Messmer tallied 10 kills and junior Kassandra Buseck adaded eight kills with only two hitting errors. Nazareth amassed at least 14 kills in each of the three sets they won. The Golden Flyers finished with hitting percentages of .387, .091, .308, and .226. during the four sets. Overall, Nazareth averaged a .254 attack percentage. Freshman Madi Wickens finished with a match-high 41 assists as Nazareth's primary setter.

Defensively, freshman Maureen Thayer tallied 20 digs, while Messmer and junior Katherine Race recorded 29 total digs. Allocco and junior Jennifer Hicks each had a solo block and an assisted block, too. Nazareth held Cortland to hitting percentages of .111, .268, .114, and .037 during the four sets. The Red Dragons finished with a .144 average hitting percentage

Race finished the match with six service aces to provide Nazareth with a 10-5 advantage in the category.

Against Union, Buseck had a career-high 29 kills and Allocco added 15. Thayer had 43 assists and Wickens amassed 20 digs. Nazareth had a 9-7 lead in the decisive fifth set following a kill by Beecher and a combination block by Jillian Van Cott and Jennifer Hicks. Union rallied by scoring eight of the last 12 points of the match.


Alfred v Houghton | Hilbert
The Alfred University volleyball team lost two matches Saturday at the Hilbert College Tri-Match.

Alfred (2-8) lost 3-0 to Houghton (25-16, 25-18, 25-10) and 3-1 to Hilbert (25-16, 25-21, 24-26, 25-23).

In the match with Houghton, AU was paced by senior Chelsea Hall with seven kills and 12 digs. Senior Samantha Wood had three blocks and five digs; senior Paige Jensen  had seven kills and 12 digs; and senior Tara Barone had nine assists.

In the match against Hilbert, Hall had seven kills and 13 digs; Wood had a pair of blocks; Jensen had four kills and 18 digs; and Barone had 20 assists.


Hartwick v Oneonta | Williams
Oneonta State and Williams were too much for the Hartwick volleyball team on Saturday as the Hawks wrapped up play at the Union College Invitational in Schenectady. 'Wick falls to 2-11 on the season.

The Hawks kept the score close against the Red Dragons in their first match of the day. Oneonta would take the first game, 25-16. The Blue and White closed the gap to 25-21 in the second game and the Dragons bested them by six points in the third to seal the victory.

Hannah Strom had the team-high in kills with 10. Ashlynn Mohan notched eight. Quincy Kinzel dished out 23 assists in the match andChristina Vitale  registered a team-best 17 digs.

The Hawks had a tough match against Williams (8-1) in the second match. The Ephs allowed 'Wick just 28 points in three games in a 25-10, 25-8, 25-10 setback.

Strom led the team with six kills and Kinzel added 12 assists. Mohan had the team-high in digs with five.


Utica v SUNYIT | Marywood
The Utica College volleyball team lost both matches on day two at the Oswego State Invitational.  UC fell to SUNYIT 3-0 in the morning contest before losing to Marywood University 3-1 in match two. 

The Wildcats won in straight games by scores of 25-19, 25-11 and 26-24, en route to a 4-0 weekend and the tournament title. 

Brandi Blaszak led UC with eight kills, five blocks and two digs, while Cassandra Manzer chipped in with six kills of her own. Sophomore Lora Allen added a team-best 12 assists and Madison Bayer helped out with four kills.

In the second match of the day, UC jumped out to an early lead, winning the first set 25-13, before losing the next three (22-25, 14-25, 22-25). 

Laura Homer-Gunther had a team-best 13 kills, followed by Brandi Blaszak (11) and Cassandra Manzer (10).  Briona Enny  had ten digs on the day while Alexis Lyon had seven.
