Empire 8 Athletes of The Week: Sept. 16, 2013
While some sports started league play over the past week and others will begin that portion of their schedule soon, one thing remains constant and that is athletes continue to show they're in stellar form.
Football Offensive co-Player – Frostburg
Ken Emmons, Junior, QB - Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville
Junior Ken Emmons accounted for 521 yards of total offense with seven touchdowns against Waynesburg. Emmons completed 24-of-41 passes for 384 yards and four touchdowns and added 137 rushing yards on 16 carries for another three scores.
Football Offensive co-Player – St. John Fisher
Tyler Fenti, Senior, QB – Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima
Tyler Fenti led the 19th ranked Cardinals to a 42-21 over Washington and Jefferson College, Saturday. The senior quarterback set a new all-time record for Fisher, throwing for 453 yards on 18-26 passing. He also threw for four touchdowns including an 87-yard pass to open the game.
Football Defensive Player – St. John Fisher
Ryan Seymour, Senior, DB – Saratoga Springs, NY/Middle Grove
Seymour had a strong day for Fisher accounting for eight tackles in its 42-21 win over Washington and Jefferson College. He also forced a fumble and blocked a field goal attempt. The Saratoga Springs native also batted down two passes.
Football Special Teams Player – Utica
Dakota Peel, Junior, Punter – Alden, NY/Alden
Dakota Peel finished the night with an average of 40.9 yards per punt, including two punts over 50 yards. He also pinned Union inside the 20 yard line twice, including a 57 yard punt that went out of bounds at Union's two yard line.
Field Hockey Offensive Player – Stevens
Marguerite Chavez, Senior, Forward – Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional
Senior forward Marguerite Chavez scored once and dished out three assists for a total of five points in Stevens' 5-1 win over W&J Saturday. Chavez also became just the second player in program history to tally 100 points in her career. She assisted three-straight markers from co-captain Megan Traub on penalty corners, and then scored her third goal of the season late in the second half. She now has 103 points for her career after her five-point Saturday outing.
Field Hockey Defensive Player – Stevens
Megan Traub, Senior, Defener – Berkeley Heights, NJ/Gov. Livingston
Senior back Megan Traub keyed the Ducks to a 5-1 Empire 8 win over W&J, scoring three goals and dishing out one assist to tie a Stevens single-game record with seven points. Traub assisted the first goal of the game on a penalty corner, then hammered home three-straight tallies on penalty-corner-inserts off the stick of classmate and co-captain Marguerite Chavez. Traub now has three goals and three assists on the season, also anchoring the middle of a Stevens defensive unit that allowed just one goal Saturday.
Men’s Cross Country Runner – Ithaca
Sawyer Hitchcock, Sophomore – Fishers, IN/Hamilton Southeastern
In his first race of 2013, sophomore Sawyer Hitchcock led the Bombers on the eight-kilometer course with a 26:20.20 finish to place fifth out of 163 competitors. He paced Ithaca to a second-place finish out of 14 teams Saturday at the Rochester Yellowjacket Invitational.
Women’s Cross Country Runner - Ithaca
Alexa Rick, Junior – Elyria, OH/Elyria Catholic
Junior Alexa Rick paced the Bombers to a first-place finish out of 13 teams Saturday at the Rochester Yellowjacket Invitational hosted at Genesee Valley Park. Rick placed third in a field of 164 runners on the 6K course as she clocked a time of 22:47.10, for a pace of 6:06.

Women’s Golf Athlete – Ithaca
Sharon Li, Junior – Happy Valley, Hong Kong/Hong Kong International
Sharon Li was the tournament medalist and Empire 8 Player of the Year after leading the Bombers to the 2013 conference championship. Li shot an opening-round 74 and followed that with a second-round score of 76 for a total of 150, six strokes better than the second-place finisher. It is the second-straight year that Li has won the Empire 8 individual title, and it was the fourth consecutive conference-tournament championship for Ithaca.
Men’s Soccer Offensive Player – Elmira
Michael Bryant, Freshman, Forward – Portola Hills, CA/El Toro
Michael Bryant registered four points this week for the Soaring Eagles, leading Elmira to a 2-1 record on the week. He scored goals in both of EC's wins. Michael is the only Elmira player to score a goal in each of EC's three wins this season.
Men’s Soccer Defensive Player – Stevens
Kevin Calloway, Junior – Sewell, NJ/Clearview Regional
Kevin Calloway tallied the first goal of his career in a 4-1 win over previously unbeaten New York University on Saturday after helping his team earn a 1-1 draw at TCNJ Wednesday night. Calloway's tally came on a bouncing ball that he attacked in the middle of the field, one-timing a missile in the upper-right-corner from 35-yards away. Calloway and the Stevens defense has allowed just three goals against all season (4-0-1).
Women’s Soccer Offensive Player – Nazareth
Michaela Soules, Freshman, Midfield – Camden, NY/Camden
Michaela Soules helped Nazareth to a win and a tie in a pair of non-conference matches in the North Country over the weekend. She scored the tying goal with 17 minutes left in a 1-1 tie against 23rd-ranked St. Lawrence last Friday and then scored the game-winning goal with :36 left in the first overtime period of a 1-0 win over Clarkson on Saturday.
Women’s’ Soccer Defensive –Utica
Jamie Enders, Freshman, Goalie – Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia
Freshman Jamie Enders totaled 22 saves as Utica went 0-1-2 last week. On Tuesday, she made seven stops as the Pioneers tied D'Youville 2-2. She followed that up on Friday with eight saves in Utica's 3-2 loss at Oswego. On Sunday she made seven saves and picked up her first collegiate shutout in a 0-0 tie to Potsdam. She is tied for first in the E8 with 46 saves on the season, and her 7.67 saves per game is second in the conference.
Women’s Tennis Player – Hartwick
Nichole Schepisi, Junior – Rensselaer, NY/Columbia
Nicole Schepisi picked up two wins on the weekend as the Hawks faced both Alfred and St. John Fisher. She won 6-2, 6-2 over Rachel Cook of Alfred and paired with Ruthie Jones to defeat Brennan Ferguson and Emily Eisenberger 8-5. On Sunday against St. John Fisher, Schepisi again teamed up with Jones in doubles competition to defeat Katie Paier and Sania Zaki 8-4. In singles, Schepisi moved to 4-1 overall on the year with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Zaki.
Women’s Volleyball Player – Elmira
Taryn Rumsey, Senior, OH – Mansfield, PA/Mansfield
Taryn Rumsey led the Soaring Eagles to a 4-0 record this week at the Road Runner Invitational. She has 51 kills during the week and a hitting percentage of .317. Taryn also recorded 11 service aces in addition to 21 digs and seven total blocks. She posted season highs in kills (22) against Mt. Aloysius, digs (10) against Mt. Aloysius, aced (5) against Ramapo, and total blocks (3) against Mt. Aloysius & St. Joe's.
Women’s Volleyball Rookie – Stevens
Mary Tobin, Freshman, OH – Boothwyn, PA/Archmere Academy
Freshman Mary Tobin was named the Most Valuable Player at the Ducks Classic this weekend after Stevens went 3-0 and kept its winning streak alive to start the season at 12-0. Tobin tallied 43 kills and 32 digs over the three matches with her best outing coming against SUNY Geneseo where she posted 12 kills and 17 digs. Tobin recorded 16 kills and seven digs vs. FDU-Florham and 15 kills with eight digs vs. Kean.
