Elmira Sweeps Saxons in Conference Opener

The Elmira College women's volleyball team (8-0, 1-0 E8) picked up their first Empire 8 Conference win of the year, defeating Alfred University (2-9, 0-2 E8) three sets to none. The victory extended their win streak to eight, which is now the second longest to open a season since 2001.

The Soaring Eagles were led offensively again by fourth-year standout, seniorTaryn Rumsey. Rumsey recorded 10 kills and four aces. She now has 117 kills on the year and leads the conference in kills per set at 4.18. Also contributing to the attack was Kierstin Derr who registered eight kills and five digs. Sami Hanes continued her excellence as she tallied 28 assists on the night.

EC was stout defensively as they held Alfred to 46 total points on the night. They nullified the Saxon attack by recording 30 digs and eight total blocks. Catherine Miller '14 led the way with eight digs from the libero position. Rumsey was close behind with seven digs on the night. Sophomore Paola Ortiz showed she could be force at the net as she sent back four attacks all on her own.

Alfred was led by senior Chelsea Hall who had 10 kills, four digs and two blocks. Senior Samantha Wood had three blocks; senior Brittant Anselment had a pair of service aces; junior Taylor Kiernan had 12 digs; and senior Janelle Gallipeau had 14 assists. 

Elmira will look to continue their unbeaten start to the season on Wednesday, September 18th when they travel to St. John Fisher College for their second Empire 8 Conference game of the season.

Alfred is in action next on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 1 p.m. at Medaille.
