’Wick Field Hockey Upended by #16 Rochester

The Hartwick field hockey team had a tough task ahead of them when they faced the #16 ranked University of Rochester. The Yellowjackets scored three times in the first and second halves on their way to a 6-0 win over Hartwick on Tuesday afternoon at Wright Stadium.

The loss drops the Hawks to 2-4 on the season. Rochester improves to 6-1.

Michelle Relin scored twice for Rochester. Tiffany White, Katie Flaschner, Lindsey Randall, and Gina Cunningham all had one score. The Yellowjackets dominated in shots, 32-2, with 14 coming off the stick of Relin. Rochester also led in corners, 9-4.

Shannon Carter got the start in goal for the Hawks and stopped a career-high 13 shots. She was relieved by Jilian Sabatino who had four saves.

Madison Wagner started for the Yellowjackets in the box and had one save in the first period. Tara Lamberti came in for her in the second half and also had one save.

Despite Rochester controlling the first half, the Hawks managed to stay in the contest. Hartwick trailed the Yellowjackets 2-0 in the 19th minute but stellar play by Carter in the box kept 'Wick in the game. In a little under four minutes of playing time, Carter came up with five saves to prevent Rochester from scoring.

The Yellowjackets did add a score with 1:06 left before halftime to go up 3-0. Rochester scored three times within a six minute period in the second half to break the game open.

Hartwick will be back in action on Saturday when they host Empire 8 rival Stevens at Wright Stadium. Game time will be at 1 p.m.
