Alfred, Houghton and Stevens Win Twice
Alfred v Gwynedd Mercy | Bryn Athyn
The Saxons opened Saturday’s play with a 3-2 victory over Gwynedd Mercy, then stopped Bryn Athyn by a 3-1 score.
Senior Chelsea Hall paced the Saxons in the win over Gwynedd Mercy with 12 kills, 13 digs and a pair of block, while senior Paige Jensen had 11 kills, five digs, two blocks and two service aces.
In the win over Bryn Athyn, Jensen led the Saxons with 11 kills, seven digs and two blocks, and Hall had nine kills and four digs.
Houghton v RIT | Lasell
Houghton volleyball got the 2013 fall campaign off to a great start with two convincing wins at the Cazenovia Blue and Gold Tournament on Saturday.
Houghton knocked off Rochester Institute of Technology, 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-16, 24-21) and followed with a 3-0 decision over Lasell College (25-14, 25-20, 25-22).
Stevens v Eastern Connecticut | Coast Guard
The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team capped off a perfect weekend at the United States Coast Guard Academy Tournament on Saturday.
The Ducks swept Eastern Connecticut State University, 25-10, 25-15, 25-19, in the opener and hit .284 as a team. Stevens' defense kept the East Conn offense at bay, holding the Warriors to a .018 hitting percentage with 52 digs and five total blocks.
Freshman Mary Tobin tallied 11 kills to lead the Ducks offensively and chipped in eight digs. Junior Katie Hall contributed eight kills, five digs and five block assists in the victory.
The Ducks wrapped up the weekend with a four-set victory over the hosts, 25-17, 13-25, 25-23, 25-23. Three Stevens players eclipsed double-digit kills and three more went over 10-plus digs in the match.
Tobin completed the match with 14 digs and 10 kills, while Mary Caulson also posted a double-double with 13 digs and 11 kills. Kirsten Salmins paced all players with another career-high 24 digs as part of a 76-dig effort from the Ducks. Salmins also helped out with five assists.
St. John FIsher v Rhode Island College | Babson College
The St. John Fisher College women's volleyball team split a pair of games Saturday morning, as the Cardinals blanked Rhode Island College 25-19, 25-11, 25-21 before losing to Babson College (21-25, 19-25, 25-27) in the final day of the RWU Invitational hosted by Roger William University.
Rachael Kline had a strong game for Fisher, smashing 10 kills in only 19 attempts, while Megan Miller had 14 digs over three sets. Erica Stickler added 15 assists.
Again, Kline led Fisher with 12 kills and a .524 hitting percentage. Miller chipped in with eight kills and a team-high 14 digs, while Stickler had 19 assists.
Nazareth v Richard Stockton | Juniata
The Golden Flyers finished the second day of the Red Dragon Invitational, hosted by Cortland, with a three-set victory over Richard Stockton and a four-set loss to 20th-ranked Juniata. The scores were 25-22, 25-23, 25-22 against the Richard Stockton and 27-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-11 against the Eagles.
In Nazareth's three-set victory against the Ospreys, junior outside hitter Kassandra Buseck had nine kills and freshman Madi Wickens had 24 assists, eight digs and three service aces as Nazareth won its third straight women's volleyball match with a three-set sweep over Richard Stockton.
In the second match against the Eagles, juniors Maria Allocco and Olivia Harrigan each had eight kills to lead the Golden Flyers. Freshman Maureen Thayer amassed 21 assists, and Wickens tallied 14 digs. Allocco was named to the all-tournament team for Nazareth.
Hartwick v Emmanuel | St. Lawrence
Hartwick dropped matches to Emmanuel (MA) and St. Lawrence on the second day of the Oneonta State Invitational.
'Wick split the first two games against Emmanuel. The Saints took the first game, 25-22, before Hartwick evened the match, 25-20, in the second. Emmanuel pulled away in the final two games, 25-17 in game three, and 25-16 in game four for the 3-1 win.
In the second match against St. Lawrence, the Hawks fell 25-17 and 25-9 in the opening two games. They battled the Saints in the third set, but fell two points short, 26-24.
Ithaca v DeSales | Muhlenberg
The Ithaca College volleyball team (1-3) suffered a pair of losses Saturday to conclude action at the DeSales Invitational at Billera Hall. The Bombers opened with a four-set loss to the host Bulldogs (3-0), 3-1 (19-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-21), and fell to Muhlenberg (2-2), 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-23).
Junior Rylie Bean, Ithaca's representative on the all-tournament team, led the Bombers with 17 kills against DeSales. Sophomore Carly Garone set for 33 assists and freshman Myan Idziur dug out 13 times.
Against the Mules, Bean registered a .429 hitting percentage with 11 kills and just two errors on 21 swings. Abbie Hutchinson added six kills, while Garone dished out 30 assists.
