Volleyball Crossover Day 2
The second day of the Empire 8 crossover was impacted by a power outage in Oneonta that affected the entire Hartwick campus, forcing the early matches to be finished at Oneonta Middle and High Schools. The scheduled 12:30 and 3pm matches were delayed to 3 and 5:30 p.m. when power was restored on campus. All matches were completed, except for the contest between Stevens and Nazareth which has been postponed to a later date.
Houghton v Utica
Houghton narrowly edged Utica in the first two sets of game one, winning 25-21, before taking the third set 25-17.
Highlanders'
Meagan Palm and
Hannah Compeau claimed 11 kills each, and
Jaclyn Algier with 10 kills.
Jaime Green handed out 31 assists.
Utica junior
Cassandra Manzer finished with nine kills, while freshman
Brandi Blaszak had seven kills and one block. Sophomore
Lora Allen had a team-high 16 kills, while Briona Enny collected 20 digs.
Nazareth v Hartwick
Nazareth defeated Empire 8 Conference rival Hartwick Saturday in three sets in a women's volleyball match that took more than four hours to complete due to the power outage. Nazareth won by scores of 25-19, 25-19, 25-23.
Junior
Kassandra Buseck had nine kills and junior
Maria Allocco had eight. Freshman
Madi Wickens had 32 assists and freshman
Maureen Thayer had 14 digs.
Hannah Strom and Dana Martin each finished with seven kills to lead Hartwick. Quincy Kinzel had 21 assists, and Christina Vitale recorded 13 digs.
Stevens v Utica
Stevens came away with a 25-15, 25-16, 25-13, sweep of the Pioneers. The Ducks hit .303 as a team and tallied seven service aces. Seven of those aces were recorded by senior
Samantha Gates, who also handed out 26 assists to go along with seven digs and two kills.
Freshman
Mary Tobin was the lone Duck to reach double-digit kills with 10 and hit .348, while junior
Kirsten Salmins paced Stevens with 10 digs.
Cassandra Manzer led the Utica in kills (six) while Bronia Enny had a team-high seven digs and Lora Allen added seven assists.
Houghton v Ithaca
Houghton posted the first-set win before Ithaca edged the Highlanders in the second to knot the series. Ithaca dominated the next frame, but Houghton mirrored Ithaca's third-game performance in the fourth to force Ithaca to its first five-setter of the season. The Highlanders put up a 15-9 fight in the final frame to earn the win (25-20, 21-25, 13-25, 25-13, 15-9).
Three players claimed a double-double for Houghton; Hannah Compeau with 12 kills and 27 digs, Hattie Burgher with 11 kills and 26 digs, and Jaime Green with 38 assists and 12 digs.
Freshman
Grace Chang recorded 12 kills, while junior
Abbie Hutchinson and rookie
Shaelynn Schmidt added double-digit kills with 10 each. Hutchinson, who had a match-best three aces, tallied a career-high and hit .391 for the match, having made just one error. Freshman
Molly Brown set for a season-best 36 assists.
Ithaca v Hartwick
The Hawks needed an extra-point effort to win the first set of the later game, 28-26, but Ithaca answered to take the match in four defeating Hartwick, 3-1 (26-28, 25-19, 25-21, 25-21).
Grace Chang hit .255 with 15 kills to lead the Bombers against the Hawks. Bean added 12, Shaelynn Schmidt nine and Abbie Hutchinson eight. Brown put up 42 assists to reset her season-best performance. Chang had 17 digs, Molly Brown 13 and Dylan Gawinski Stern 12.
Qunicy Kinzel would distribute 43 assists in the match for Hartwick. Hannah Strom and Dana Martin would each register double-doubles. Strom accumulated a match-high 18 kills and 17 digs. Martin added 10 assists and 15 digs. Christina Vitale had a match-high 20 digs for the Hawks.
The first frame was tied 10 times. Ithaca owned a 21-16 lead, but Hartwick answered with a 6-1 run for a 22-22 tie. The set bounced back-and-forth and ended in the Hawks' favor, 28-26. In the next game, Ithaca busted out of an 8-8 standstill to lead 20-12 and denied Hartwick a comeback, taking the second 25-19. The Bombers repeated in the third cracking an 8-8 stalemate for a 16-10 lead. They maintained their cushion for a 22-16 lead before securing a 25-21 win. The 8-8 tie theme continued in the fourth, but this time it was Hartwick that took the lead, 15-11. Ithaca outlasted the Hawks for the fourth-set win to claim its first conference win of the season.
St. John Fisher v Oneonta | Pitt-Bradford
The St. John Fisher College volleyball team picked up two wins, Saturday after blanking SUNY Oneonta 3-0 and the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford 3-1 in a quad match held at Bobby Wanzer Court.
With the wins, Fisher improves to 10-7 overall including three wins in its last four matches.
In the opening game, the Cardinals looked sharp as Oneonta was unable to gain any kind of momentum.
Rachael Kline led the Cardinals with nine kills.
Megan Miller finished with 11 digs, six kills and four aces, while
Erin Crandall tallied a team-high 14 digs.
Erica Stickler dished out 11 assists.
Paige Willson and
Mandi Mereness were each credited with four blocks.
After a short recess, Fisher squared off with the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford and took a quick 2-0 advantage. The Cardinals held a late 25-24 lead, but the panthers responded, scoring two quick points to put Fisher on its heels. Both teams exchanged advantages, but the Panthers rallied, scoring four of the set's final five points to earn a 28-26 victory, forcing a fourth set in the process.
Back-and-forth the score went in the fourth frame until the Cardinals rattled off eight points including five straight to hold a commanding 19-11 lead. The Panthers tried to rally, but it was not in the cards as Fisher sealed the win 25-16.
Miller led Fisher with 13 kills and 14 digs, while Willson tallied 12 kills on 24 attempts for a .417 hitting percentage.
Andrea Gillespie had 14 digs to go along with three service aces and
Ali Mann had a career-high 22 assists giving her 210 on the season.
Elmira v Alfred State | Hilbert
The Elmira College women's volleyball team (9-4) lost the first matchup today against Alfred State College (9-4) in another five-set thriller, then finished the Oswego State University Invitational with a 3-0 sweep against Hilbert College (4-9).
Elmira 2, Alfred State 3 – 25-19, 25-19, 17-25, 30-32, 13-15
The Purple and Gold started the match strong as they won the first two sets but could not close the match out as Alfred State battled back and won the next three sets. Elmira was led by
Taryn Rumsey '14 who posted 21 kills, 11 digs, two block assists and one solo block in the first game of today's action. Also chipping in for the Soaring Eagles were
Kierstin Derr'16 and
Amanda Blinkinsop '16 who combined to notch in 25 kills, 15 digs, three aces and three block assists.
Sami Hanes '16 and
Catherine Miller '14 also helped out today. Hanes penciled in 49 assists, 10 digs, two block assists and one kill, while Miller posted 27 digs and two assists.
Elmira 3, Hilbert 0 – 25-16, 25-23, 25-20
EC finished the Oswego State University Invitational on a high note as they swept Hilbert College three sets to none to snap the four-game losing streak. Elmira was led by Blinkinsop who tallied 13 digs, nine kills, one assist and one ace in the second game of the day. Rumsey helped out with 14 digs, seven kills, one ace and one block assist while
Sara Pieniazek '17 and Hanes combined to post 26 assists and six digs.
