Soccer Recap: Sept. 25
Ithaca 5, Utica 0
The No. 8 Ithaca College women's soccer team (6-1-0, 2-0-0) defeated Utica Wednesday afternoon, shutting out the Pioneers by a score of 5-0 at Carp Wood Field. Seniors Amanda Callanan and Jackie Rodabaugh, sophomore Kelsey King and freshmen Megan Nash and Hannah Haskell all scored in the Bomber victory.
Sophomore Beth Coppolecchia earned her sixth win of the season, stopping both shots she faced in 73:44 minutes. Senior Becca Lewis closed out the contest for Ithaca, holding the Pioneers scoreless in the final 16:16 of play.
Callanan got on the board first for the Bombers, as she scored on a penalty kick just 8:40 into the game for a 1-0 Ithaca lead. In the 31st minutes, freshman Holly Niemiec pushed a centering pass towards the Pioneer net, finding Nash for the tip in. Nash's goal marked the first of her collegiate career, and gave Ithaca the 2-0 lead at the half.
Rodabaugh opened the second half with her second goal of the season, scoring on a feed from fellow senior Jessie Warren (Medway, Mass./Medway) in the 52nd minute. The Bombers took a 4-0 lead in the 65th minute, as King scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Haskell capped the scoring for Ithaca, as her first collegiate goal in the final six minutes of play secured the 5-0 shutout victory for the Bombers.
Hartwick 2, Elmira 2
Hartwick women's soccer earned its first point in conference play on Wednesday night with a 2-2 tie against the visiting Elmira College Soaring Eagles in a match played at Elmore Field. The Hawks were less than two minutes away from winning the match but an Emily Kelly tally with 1:45 left in regulation forced overtime.
In the extra sessions, the Hawks dominated with an 8-0 advantage in shots but couldn't find the game-winner.
Angela Luizzi and Allyson Daniels registered the Hartwick goals. Hope Brown made two saves and also had three shots in the overtime periods, all coming by way of Hartwick free kicks.
Drew 4, Stevens 3 (OT)
The Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team went to overtime with Drew University on Wednesday evening in Hoboken, but fell, 4-3, in the final minute of the first overtime. With the loss, Stevens is now 3-5 overall, while Drew improves to 7-1.
Drew took an early 1-0 lead just 2:01 into the match after Liz Loiodice stole a clearance pass by the Stevens defense and beat sophomore Leah Spaulding with a strike from 20 yards out into the top right corner of the goal.
The Ducks knotted the match up in the 18th minute that started on a corner. After the service into the box, senior Bridgette Barden sent a header towards frame which was turned away by Sara Nash, but fellow senior Becky Wos came crashing in to collect the rebound for her second goal of the season.
With just over 19 minutes left in the half, freshman Raba Nassif put the ball back into play with a throw in to Barden. Barden then turned and sent a shot from the left corner of the 18 over the head of Nash to give Stevens a 2-1 lead.
Exactly four minutes later, the Rangers stole another clearance by the Ducks' defense, this time by Mel Santos. Santos intercepted the attempt 20 yards outside the frame and deadlocked the contest at 2-2 on her first goal of the season for Drew.
In the second half, Loiodice crossed a pass into the middle of the 18 and found the feet of Santos who beat sophomore Evelyn Ting to give the Rangers a 3-2 edge. Ting replaced Spaulding in the second half and made four saves in nearly 55 minutes but suffered the loss.
Stevens tied the match back up at 3-3, when a loose ball in front of the frame was put away by junior Stephanie Basile. Basile cleaned up an attempted shot by Barden after a scrum took place within the six-yard box to put the contest into overtime.
Drew ended the contest with 46 seconds left in the first overtime on a short cross from the right side by Katie O'Keefe that found Caroline Kuras open within 10 yards of the goal.
Stevens outshot Drew, 22-14, and took six corners to just two for the Rangers.
RIT 2, Nazareth 0
RIT scored a pair of second-half goals Wednesday in a non-conference women's soccer match at Golden Flyer Stadium and the Tigers kept the Nazareth offense in check to record a 2-0 victory over the Golden Flyers.
After a methodically played first half, RIT scored early in the second following a scramble in front of Nazareth senior keeper Abbie Carey. RIT's Elizabeth May was credited with her second goal of the season with assists going to Quincey Ornellas and Ehlana Gray.
The Tigers had a great opportunity to go up 2-0 in the 52nd minute when Sierra Kiss slipped a shot underneath Carey, who had come off her mark, but Nazareth freshman Jessica Barden was able to kick the ball away before it crossed the goal line.
Nazareth's Michaela Soules had a chance to tie the score, but her shot from the top of the box in the 69th minute was saved by Tigers' keeper Sienna Fisher.
RIT added its insurance goal in the 72nd minute following a Nazareth foul about five yards outside the Nazareth box. RIT's Gwen Neuhaus took the free kick off the restart and the ball deflected off the hands of Carey before settling in the back of the net.
Nazareth picked up the intensity a bit following Neuhaus' goal as the Golden Flyers had seven of their 11 shots after that, but Fisher was equal to the challenge for the Tigers by making seven saves and picking up her second shutout of the season and sixth overall the RIT. In fact RIT has yielded just two goals over its first eight games this season.
Soules and senior Julia Teran Pulford each had three shots on goal for Nazareth, which got six saves from Carey.
