Volleyball Results: Sept 27
Stevens v NYU | Susquehanna
The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team fell in both matches on Friday evening in the Stevens Invitational to New York University and Susquehanna University in Hoboken. Stevens is now 14-4 overall on the season and will look to rebound tomorrow afternoon against Brooklyn College at 3 p.m.
In the opening match of the night, NYU avenged an early season loss to the Ducks with a 25-20, 25-22, 17-25, 25-20 victory. Stevens committed 34 errors in attacks and service attempts and hit just .172 in the match. NYU hit .279 and had seven more kills than Stevens. The Ducks did, however, tally eight service aces.
Freshmen
Christina Sciarra and
Mary Tobin each recorded 12 kills to lead Stevens offensively. Sciarra hit at a .400 clip, while Tobin added 10 digs. Senior
Samantha Gates handed out 39 assists to go along with 10 digs and two aces. Classmate
Mary Caulson posted eight kills with three aces and four digs. Junior
Kirsten Salmins paced Stevens with 22 digs, while fellow junior
Katie Hall added six kills and three blocks.
In the straight sets loss to the Crusaders, 27-25, 26-24, 25-14, Stevens once again struggled offensively with just a .143 hitting percentage. The Ducks led in set two, 20-10, but lost momentum after a Susquehanna timeout which led to the Crusaders going on a 16-4 run the rest of the way for the comeback win.
Sciarra led the Ducks with nine kills, while Caulson was close behind with seven more. Gates dished out 23 assists and chipped in 10 digs with three aces. Salmins totaled 12 digs and Tobin pitched in five kills.
The Crusaders used 10 aces and nine total blocks to control play at the service line and net.
Elmira v Lycoming | Pennsylvannia
The Elmira College women's volleyball team (11-5, 1-1 E8) competed in the first day of the Lycoming College Invitational today. The Soaring Eagles played the first game against Lycoming College (11-6) where they fell in three sets (20-25, 23-25, 11-25). The EC women then went on to play Pennsylvania College of Technology (4-10) in the second game where the Soaring Eagles won 3-0 (25-8, 25-8, 25-15).
The Purple and Gold fell to Lycoming in three sets in today's action. After losing the first set by just five points, Elmira battled back for the second set as the lead changed three different times. However, the EC women got edged out by two points to go down 0-2. Lycoming took the momentum to their advantage as they overcame Elmira by 14 points in the third set.
Taryn Rumsey led the Soaring Eagles with 14 kills, five digs and two assists while
Sami Hanes pitched in with 19 assists, 10 digs, two kills and two aces.
Kierstin Derr and
Catherine Miller contributed with a combined 22 digs, five kills, three assists and one block assist.
The Purple and Gold were able to bounce back after getting swept by Lycoming by having a sweep of their own against Pennsylvania 3-0. In the first two sets Elmira soared past the Wildcats 25-8. Pennsylvania tried to battle back in the third set but it would not be enough as the EC women would win by 10 points. The leaders for the Soaring Eagles were once again Rumsey and Hanes. Rumsey tallied 10 kills and one dig while Hanes posted 31 assists, four aces, one dig and one kill.
Amanda Blinkinsop and Miller helped out by combining to get for 14 digs, nine aces and seven kills in today's win.
Ithaca v St. Mary's College of Maryland | Lycoming
The Ithaca College volleyball team (6-12) fell in four, 3-1 (22-25, 25-12, 25-16, 25-19) to St. Mary's College of Maryland (9-2), before suffering a five-set heartbreak, 3-2 (25-13, 23-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-13), to the host Warriors (12-6) Friday night at the Lycoming Tip-Off Classic in Lamade Gymnasium.
Against the Seahawks, freshman
Shaelynn Schmidt and junior
Rylie Bean led Ithaca's offense with 11 kills each. Rookie
Breanne Tuohy matched a season-best with eight kills on 16 swings. Freshman
Molly Brown dished out 21 assists and sophomore
Carly Garone chipped in 12. Junior
Abbie Hutchinson served up a career-high tying four aces. Sophomore
Dylan Gawinski Stern dug out 17 times and Bean and Brown did so 11 times each.
Utica v Cazenovia | SUNY Canton
The Utica College volleyball split two games on the opening day of the Wildcat Classic at SUNYIT on Friday night. The Pioneers snapped their eight-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over Cazenovia College in the first game, before falling 3-1 to SUNY Canton in the second match.
UC finished the first match 25-11, 23-25, 25-12, and 25-20 seal the victory. Junior
Alyssa Nicotera had a season-high 13 kills and added four digs to lead the Pioneers. Freshman
Brandi Blaszak has 12 kills and added 13 blocks, while sophomore
Laura Homer-Gunther had a career-high 22 blocks. Junior
Briona Enny had 13 digs and
Lora Allen added 25 assists in the outing.
Blaszak led the team with seven kills and a career-high 16 blocks in the second match. Homer-Gunther and
Cassandra Manzer each tallied eight blocks in the match and Enny added seven digs in the effort.
