Elmira junior Amy Schmidt picked up a first round victory at the USTA-ITA Northeast Regional Championships Saturday afternoon. Her three-set win is the first main draw victory in Elmira College women's tennis history at the prestigious tournament.

Schmidt drew SUNY Brockport's Lauren Bohman in the first round in a matchup of number one singles players. The third-year standout dropped the first set 5-7, but rallied to take the second set 6-3. The match came down to the deciding, third-set super tiebreaker where the first to 10 points gets to advance. Schmidt stood strong in the third set and completed her comeback with a 10-7 victory. The captain's run would unfortunately end in the next round as she would fall to the number 13 seeded player in the tournament, Marylen Santos of SUNY Geneseo.

Ayaka Yoshino drew a tough assignment in the first round, going up against the number 15 seed, Maite Vera Antelo of RIT. Yoshino threw everything she had at Antelo, but it was not enough as she fell 6-2, 6-0. The 2012 Empire 8 All-Conference Honorable Mention honoree received a walk-over in the first round of the consolation draw and will be back in action tomorrow morning.

Schmidt was back on the courts for the first round of doubles play with her partner, Kayla Fitzgerald as the pair took on a doubles team from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). RPI proved to be too strong for EC's first doubles team, defeating the duo 8-2. The Soaring Eagles also lost their first consolation match 8-1 to the number two seeded doubles team from NYU, who were upset in the first round of the championships.
