ONEONTA, NY- The Hartwick women's tennis team got their 2013 season off on the right foot as they defeated the Sage Colleges 7-2 on Tuesday afternoon at the Hartwick courts.
The Hawks took two of the three doubles matches. The first doubles team of
Ruthie Jones (Ossining, NY/Ossining) and
Nicole Schepisi (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) fell in their match 8-5. Hartwick rebounded with wins in second and third doubles.
Rebecca Clark (Mexico, NY/Mexico) and
Michaela Finnegan (Cumberland, ME/Greely) took care of Erin Duffy and Katie Schultz, 8-2.
Kristen Napolitano (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) and
Lauren Noyes (Rochester, NY/Churchville, NY) handled Lauren Bendal and Jessica Houbre, 8-0.
In singles play, the longest match belonged to Napolitano. She went to a super tie-breaker with Katie Schultz and came out with a 6-1, 6-7, (4-7), 10-4 victory.
Caitlin O'Brien (Glenville, NY / Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) won her first collegiate match with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Sage's Mary Kate Hayward.
Schepisi, Clark, and Noyes were all winners in their respective matches. Schepisi won 6-1, 6-2 versus Nicole Riley. Clark defeated Erin Duffy 6-0, 6-4 in third singles. Noyes was victorious against Dana Fowler 6-1, 6-2 in sixth singles.
Hartwick enters Empire 8 play this weekend with two matches. The Hawks will face Nazareth on Saturday at 1 p.m. followed by a match with Stevens the following day at 1 p.m.
