Elmira Closes Out Fall Season with Loss to Continentals

Pine Valley, NY -- The Elmira College men's tennis team (1-2) closed out their fall season with a tough 8-1 loss to Hamilton College Sunday afternoon.
Austin Mansell '16, in his first appearance with the Soaring Eagles this fall, was the lone winner on the day.
All three doubles matches went in favor of the Continentals, but Elmira's first and second doubles teams gave Hamilton a run for their money. EC's first doubles team of
Keith Bujak '15 and
Sam Pine '14 had a 4-2 lead early on, but a crucial hold by the Continentals to make it 4-3 sparked a 6-1 run to close out the match with an 8-5 score. Mansell and his doubles partner,
Satchal Waters '16, teamed up together for the first time since the spring season concluded at second doubles. The duo, who was named 2012 Empire 8 All-Conference Honorable Mention, could not overcome an early break of serve as they went on to lose by that break, 8-6. Hamilton took third doubles by the score of 8-4.
The singles matches were, for the most part, also close contests with two of them requiring third set super tiebreakers. Hamilton took first, second, third, and fourth singles in straight sets although
Pavle Vashakidze '16 and Waters showed fight at first and fourth singles respectively. Pine took the first set of his match 7-5, but fell in the second set 6-2 and dropped the deciding 10-point tiebreaker 10-4.
The final match on the court was the sixth singles match between Mansell and Hamilton's Burke Paxton. The second-year player, taking a short break from his responsibilities on the EC men's soccer team, rallied for a thrilling three set victory. He lost the first set 6-3, but rebounded to take the second set 6-4. Mansell took over in the tiebreaker, winning it 10-6.
After a busy first month, the Soaring Eagles will step away from competition until the spring when they will pick up with their primary season and their conference schedule.
