Volleyball Teams Go 4-0 on Wednesday

Elmira 3, Pitt-Bradford 2
After falling behind two sets to one, the Elmira College women's volleyball team (1-0) rallied to claim their first win of the 2013 season as they defeated Pitt-Bradford (1-4) in five sets (12-15, 25-21, 23-25, 25-18, 15-13).  Elmira's Taryn Rumsey  guided the Soaring Eagles to their first win of the year with 21 kills while recording 10 digs and two solo blocks.

Kiersten Derr  added another 11.  Setting up the EC attack was Sami Hanes , who assisted on 41 kills tonight.


Utica 3, Cazenovia 0 (Box Score)
The Utica College volleyball team got off to a hot start as it downed visiting Cazenovia College 3-0 in its season opener Wednesday night at the Clark Athletic Center.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early lead in the first set, cruising to a 25-14 victory.  UC continued its momentum into the second stanza, downing the Wildcats 25-16, before dominating the third set by a score of 25-4. 

Juniors Madison Bayer and Briona Enny led the way for UC.  Bayer had  six kills and added 10 digs, while Enny led the squad with 11 digs and contributed one service ace.  Sophomore Lora Allen had a team-best 17 assists.


Stevens v Hunter | FDU-Florham
The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team improved its record to 5-0 on the season with a 3-0 victory over Hunter College and a 3-1 triumph against FDU-Florham in Madison, N.J. on Wednesday evening. 

The Ducks swept Hunter in their first match of the evening, 25-14, 25-17, 25-20. Stevens only trailed four times throughout the entirety of the match and capitalized on 39 total errors by the Hawks. The Ducks outhit Hunter, .212 to .064 and scored with 12 service aces.

Senior Samantha Gates put together the best all-around match for Stevens with 24 assists, six digs, four kills and two blocks. Gates was perfect in kill attempts (4-for-4) and led all players in assists.

Defensively, junior Kirsten Salmins registered a match-best 14 digs to lead the Ducks for the fourth straight contest. 

Stevens capped off the evening with a 25-14, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22, win over the hosts of the tri-match. The Ducks posted their highest hitting percentage of the season at .311 with 47 kills on 122 attempts and just nine errors.

Freshman Christina Sciarra topped Stevens with 13 kills on 28 swings to go along with three blocks, while Tobin was the second Duck to reach double-digit kills with 10. Mary Tobin tallied 11 digs for a double-double.
Katie Hall added to her evening with nine kills, five digs, three blocks and two aces. She hit an impressive .615 in the match on 13 tries. Gates handed out 28 assists with six digs.
