Nazareth 2, Geneseo 0 (
Box Score)
Nazareth gained its first women's soccer victory of the 2013 season Friday as the Golden Flyers scored once in each half of a 2-0 non-conference win over Geneseo.
Sophomore
Danielle Wilkin and junior
Kaitlyn Sowyrda each had a goal for the Golden Flyers.
In the first half of play Nazareth came out hard and controlled possession. Though controlling play, the Golden Flyers did not score until the 34th minute. The goal started with a short corner kick from junior
Tyler Carr, who found the foot of teammate
Elizabeth Howell. Howell lofted the ball into the box, finding the head of Wilkin, who was able to beat Geneseo keeper Julia Sanger for her first career goal.
There was no change in rhythm in the second half. Nazareth came out hard, smart, and ready to play. The Flyers stayed strong on offense and defense, earning a total of nine shots, and only allowing three. Senior goalkeeper
Bethany Novak, making her first start of the season, made a big save when Geneseo's Amanda Gray was able to slip through the Nazareth defense and earn a one-on-one opportunity. Novak came off her line and smothered the ball at Gray's feet. Novak totaled four saves for the Flyers.
In the 70th minute, Sowyrda was awarded a goal after Carr ricocheted a shot off the cross bar. Junior
Tori Ryan recovered the ball, helping Sowyrda to bury the ball in the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
King's College 2, Elmira 1 (
Box Score)
The Elmira College women's soccer team (1-1) fell on the road 2-1 tonight against the Lady Monarchs of King's College (3-0).
Janine Swanson scored late in the second half on a penalty kick but it would not be enough as the Soaring Eagles dropped their first game of the 2013 season.
After a scoreless first half, the Lady Monarchs wasted little time in the second half as they scored the game's opening goal at the 47:10 mark. King's would add to their lead in the 70th minute with another goal, giving them a two goal cushion.
However, the final 20 minutes would be controlled by the Soaring Eagles as EC outshot King's 4-to-0 and also held the advantage in corner kicks, 1-0. The EC pressure would prove to be beneficial as the Purple and Gold were awarded a penalty kick in the 73rd minute. Unfortunately for Elmira, opposing goalie Jessica Natale '16 would make a diving save on the penalty kick to maintain the 2-0 lead.
Elmira would eventually cut the lead to one late in the second half as Swanson scored her first goal of the year by converting on penalty kick at the 89:50 mark. However, EC was unable to complete the comeback as time expired, resulting in a 2-1 loss.
Brockport 2, St. John Fisher 1 (
Box Score)
In a rematch of last year's ECAC Upstate Championship, the St. John Fisher College women's soccer team jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but Brockport scored the game's final two goals and rallied for a 2-1 win over the visiting Cardinals on Friday afternoon.
Fisher, who defeated Brockport 3-2 in last year's title game, took a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute as freshman
Taryn Guinta scored her first career goal off a pass from
Chelsea Oberkrieser.
Brockport tied the game in the closing moment of the first half and scored the game-winning goal in the 63rd minute.
Fisher out-shot Brockport 17-16 for the game, but wasn't able to tally the equalizer.
Junior
Brooke Seavitt saw her first career action in goal and made four saves over 90 minutes.
Mount Union 1, Utica 0 (

Sarah Southwell and
Sara Kubera each had one shot on goal for the Pioneers. Mount Union also held a 7-3 advantage on corner kicks.
