Men's Soccer Nets 10 Goals on Saturday

Utica 2, Baruch 1 (Box Score)
The Utica College men's soccer team jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 56 minutes and held on for a 2-1 victory over visiting Baruch College to land the Pioneers their first win of the season on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium Saturday night. Sophomore Greg Silvestro and junior Shane Ruffing each netted a goal to help lead the Pioneers (1-3).

UC got on the board in the 19th minute of the first half to snap a two-game scoreless streak when Silvestro converted into the upper left corner after a beautiful lead pass from senior Jonathon Peterson

The Pioneers went up 2-0 just over ten minutes into the second half after a long ball was sent in by Chris Stashko right to the foot of Kevin McAlliser, McAllister then slipped a pass to the left side to Ruffing, who buried the eventual game-winner into the upper left side of the net. 

Baruch countered with its lone goal of the game in the 70th minute after a crossing pass into the box from team-leading scorer Victor Tlepshev connected with the foot of Edward Humphreys to cut the Pioneer lead in half.

Nazareth 3, Oswego 2 (Box Score)
Senior Ryan Foley scored two goals and senior Jimmy Gaffney also scored in the second half for visiting Nazareth Saturday as the Golden Flyers defeated Oswego in a non-conference men's soccer match, 3-2.

Foley leads the Golden Flyers with three goals in the team's first four games. He scored in the 18th minute to give Nazareth a 1-0 advantage. Then after Oswego tied the score prior to halftime, Foley scored again in the 48th minute to put the Golden Flyers in front for good.

Gaffney's goal, his first of the season in the 75th minute, provided the Golden Flyers with some insurance. Senior Tommy Rocco gained an assist.

Each team had 10 shots. Nazareth freshman Nate Ripic played all 90 minutes in goal for the Golden Flyers and was credited with three saves.


Houghton 4, Fredonia 0 (Box Score)
The Highlanders exploded for four goals over a 14-minute span in the second half to break open a scoreless game and cruised to a 4-0 win over Fredonia State in the Blue Devil Clarion Inn Classic on Saturday.

The Highlanders were in control throughout the first half and held a 9-3 shots advantage in the opening stanza, but a strong Blue Devil defense limited the quality opportunities. Head Coach Matt Webb made a few halftime adjustments that created more scoring chances after the break.

The Highlanders finally broke through in the 62nd minute when Paul Seddon scored off the post for 1-0 Highlander lead. Freshman Landon Sheaffer  added a goal less than five minutes later, heading in a cross from Kevin Miranda  Barely 90 seconds passed before Connor Vogan scored on a header of his own, redirecting a pass from Cory Brautigam . Sheaffer scored his second of the contest -- this one an unassisted tally -- just eight minutes later to finish the scoring.

Jared Toth earned MVP honors for his efforts. Seddon, Miranda and Sheaffer were also named to the all-tournament team.


Canton 2, Alfred 0 (Box Score)
The Alfred University men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision at SUNY Canton Saturday afternoon.

Canton scored a goal in each half and outshot the Saxons, 15-9. AU sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Unick (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) made nine saves for AU, which falls to 1-3 on the season.

Muhlenburg 1, Ithaca 0 (OT) (Box Score)
The Ithaca College men's soccer team (0-3) lost to Muhlenberg Saturday evening, falling to the Mules by a score of 1-0 in the 103rd minute. Junior Max Bjork and sophomore Blair Carney each recorded a shot on goal while sophomore goalkeeper Kenny Chapman made three saves on four shots.

A scoreless defensive duel carried into the second overtime, but ended in the Mules' favor. Just over three minutes into double overtime, Muhlenberg was able to slip the ball by Chapman on a header off a corner kick.

Muhlenberg outshot the Bombers by an 18-8 margin and registered five corner kicks to Ithaca's three.

Scranton 2, St. John Fisher 1 (Box Score)
The St. John Fisher College men's soccer team fell to 2-2 on the year, as the Cardinals suffered a 2-1 loss at Scranton University on Saturday afternoon.

Fisher trailed 1-0, but tied the game up in the 24th minute on a penalty kick from Danny Yancone.

The two teams went to the locker rooms tied at 1-1, but the Royals scored the game-winning goal 10 minutes into the second half, collecting a rebound off the crossbar on a direct kick.

Kyle Metcalfe made eight saves in net for the Cardinals.
