Caitlyn Labonte was named the Engineering Cup's Most Outstanding Defensive Player.
Stevens 2, NYU 0 (
Box Score)
The Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team needed a victory in regulation and by a two-goal margin over New York University to secure a tie with Vassar College for the 2013 Engineering Cup title and did just that with a 2-0 triumph over NYU on Sunday afternoon. Sunday's victory is the first of the season for Stevens and is the seventh Cup crown in the 10-year existence of the tournament for the Ducks.
With a strong tailwind during the first half, Stevens used the aid of Mother Nature to notch two first half goals and played superb defense to tally the win. The Violets could only muster one shot in the first 45 minutes of the contest and could barely advance the ball past midfield due to the constant wind in their face.
The Ducks picked up their first goal in the 29th minute off what appeared to be an entry pass from freshman
Allison Kopacz 35 yards out but a high bounce and a push from the wind sent the ball over the head of NYU's goalkeeper into the net.
Not even nine minutes later, Stevens used a more conventional way to tally a score as junior
Ann Heine used a short cross to senior Bridget Barden who made a run her Heine's left and distributed the pass into the net with a right-footed flick past Cassie Steinberg.
Elmira 4, Potsdam 2 (
Box Score)
Four different Soaring Eagles tallied goals on the day en route to a 4-2 win over visiting SUNY Potsdam.
Kimi Girmus recorded her first career goal for the game-winning score with 10:19 left in the contest. The win improves Elmira College to 2-1 and drops SUNY Potsdam to 1-3 on the year.
Elmira applied the pressure from the opening kickoff and it paid off just 15 minutes into the game as EC would score off one of one of the 11 corner kicks they had on the day.
Kelsie DeKarski sent the corner kick into the box where it was controlled by
Janine Swanson. Swanson then found
Mollie Hamilton in front of the net for the easy goal.
The Soaring Eagles would strike again just seven minutes later when
Caitlyn Criscuolo tallied her first goal of the year.
Potsdam would not go away, however, as they fought back to record their first goal of the game in the 37th minute.
The game stayed at 2-1 for much of the second half, but the last 10-plus minutes provided all the action the fans were looking for. With 10:19 left on the clock, Girmus got in on the scoring action as she tallied her first career goal and gave Elmira a 3-1 lead.
Potsdam would again cut the Elmira lead to one, this time with 4:10 left on the clock.
The game was sealed when newcomer,
Meagan Fullen, registered her first career goal just 43 seconds after the Potsdam goal.
The Soaring Eagles outshot Potsdam 24-14 and earned seven more corner kicks than the Bears (11-4). Amanda Banner made two saves on the day for her first career victory.
