Alfred Stay Unbeaten in Conference Play


Alfred 80, Elmira 64 (Box Score)
 The Alfred University men's basketball team downed visiting Elmira College, 80-64, Saturday afternoon at McLane Center.

Back-to-back layups from senior forward Steve Lothridge and junior forward Jeremy Johnson lifted AU to a 17-point lead (35-18) with 2:27 left in the first half. The Saxons led 39-25 at halftime.

The Soaring Eagles cut the deficit to three points (46-43) with 14 minutes left in the second half, but Alfred re-established their lead back to 12 points (64-52) when freshman guard Tyler Seelman buried a three-pointer, at the 7:15 minute mark.

For the game, Alfred shot 42 percent from the field, 26 percent from beyond the arc, and 67 percent from the free-throw line.  FULL STORY 


Nazareth 86, Hartwick 76 (Box Score)
Sophomore Maurice Mills scored a career-high 29 points and senior Brad Ford combined 24 points with a game-high 14 rebounds for host Nazareth Saturday as the Golden Flyers defeated Hartwick in an Empire 8 Conference men's basketball game, 86-76, at the Kidera Gymnasium.

Saturday's game was tied at halftime 29-29, but the Golden Flyers led for most of the second half. Back-to-back baskets by Hartwick's Joey Lufkin and Marc Summy put the Hawks in front, 62-61, with 6:43 to play, but the Golden Flyers answered by scoring six straight points to regain the lead for good at 67-62. First Morse connected on a three-point shot for his only field goal of the game, Mitch Ford hit a layup and Morse added a free throw to complete the mini surge.

Nazareth went 28 for 58 from the field (48.3 percent) and 27 for 37 from the free throw line (73 percent). Nazareth also enjoyed a 44-27 rebounding advantage. FULL STORY 


Utica 87, Ithaca 73 (Box Score)
The Utica College men's basketball team snapped a four game skid and earned its first Empire 8 Conference victory of the season after a convincing 87-73 victory over visiting Ithaca College on Saturday afternoon at the Harold T. Clark Athletic Center Gymnasium.

Ithaca dropped the game's first bucket to take a 2-0 and would hold the edge for the first five minutes before the home Pioneers would show their home court confidence.  UC took the lead 7-6, at 13:52 and never looked back as it used a 21-10 run to move the score 28-16 with 7:24 to play in the first half. The teams battled for the remainder of the first 20 as Utica took a 13 point cushion into the break, 45-32.

Ithaca fought back in the second half however never pulled to within less than nine points as the Pioneers recorded their first Empire 8 win of the season.  The bombers outshot UC in the second half 50.9% to an even 50% but would fall 87-73 to remain winless at 0-4 in conference play. Utica hit 14-of-19 from the free throw line for 73.7% making up for a dismal outing last night at the line which proved big late in this afternoon's game.  FULL STORY 


St. John Fisher 80, Stevens 67 (Box Score)
The St. John Fisher College men's basketball program handed Stevens Institute of Technology its first Empire 8 Conference loss on Saturday, as the Cardinals picked up an 80-67 win over the Ducks.

With 9:22 left in the first half, Fisher led by two points at 17-15, but went on an 11-0 run over the next four minutes to take a 28-15 advantage and led 40-24 at the break.

Stevens cut Fisher's lead down to single digits with 11 minutes left at 53-44, but Fisher answered with a 3-pointer from Adam Ambielli and the Cardinals never looked back.  FULL STORY
