Hartwick Swimming and Diving Splits at Cortland

CORTLAND, NY- The Hartwick men's and women's swimming and diving teams traveled to SUNY Cortland for a dual meet with the Red Dragons on Sunday afternoon. The men were victorious as they won by the score of 177-111 while the women fell 170-124.

Ben Detar (Charleston, SC/Hanahan), Luke Grunewald (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free Acad.), Brad Ranson (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley), and Matt Plunkett (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Cooper City) all won two events each to lead the Hawks to the win. Detar came in first in the 100 fly (53.95) and the 200 fly (1:57.07). Teammates Matt Souza (Mansfield, MA.Mansfield) (2:07.77) and Brendan Quinn (Raleigh, NC/Heritage) were second and third, respectively, in the 200 fly.

Grunewald touched the wall first in the 500 free (4:57.37) and the 1000 free (10:07.11). Quinn came in second in both races (4:57.37- 500 free, 10:17.70- 1000 free).

Ranson won the 100 free (48.24) and the 200 free events (1:46.60). He also added a second place finish in the 50 free (22.29).

Plunkett was the winner of the 100 back (55.74) and 200 back (2:00.05). Brian Edmister III (Belmont, NY/Genesse Valley Central) (56.44 – 100 back, 2:03.05 – 200 back) and Alexander Gibson (San Leandro, CA/Castro Valley High) (58.13 – 100 back, 2:03.85 – 200 back) were second and third.

Plunkett and Ranson teamed up with Joey Mulvehill (Penfield, NY/Penfield) and Evan DeGidio (Jacksonville, FL/Episcopal School) in the 400 free relay. The squad won with a time of 3:16.55.

The women were led by Gwen Mathias' (Sunland, CA/Southwestern Academy) two victories. She was first in the 500 free (5:22.23) and the 1000 free (11:01.54). Mathias was also second in the 200 free (2:02.48). Kaitlyn Campbell (Hanover Park, IL/Glenhard North) won the 200 free in 2:02.45 while finishing as the runner-up in the 1000 free event (5:24.28)

Clare Nelson (South Hadley, MA/South Hadley) was the other winner for Hartwick in the 200 breast (2:29.85). She added a second place result of 1:10.32 in the 100 breast that was .38 of a second behind Michaela Auer of the Red Dragons

Imma Rutigliano (Tillson, NY/John A.Coleman) had a trio of second place finishes. Her time of 1:03.95 in the 100 back was just .25 of a second behind Angelica Ford of Cortland. Rutigliano also was second to Ford in the 200 back (2:18.48) and the runner-up in the 200 IM (2:19.59). Lindsay Bierwert (Leeds, MA/Northampton) swam to a second place result in the 100 fly (1:02.80).

Both teams return to Moyer Pool next Saturday to host Alfred. The dual meet between the Hawks and Saxons will start at 1 p.m.
