Mitrano Presented with Commissioners Meritorious Award
Empire 8 Athletic Conference Commissioner, Chuck Mitrano was presented with the Division III Commissioners Association (DIIICA) 13th Annual Meritorious Service Award.
The award was presented to Mitrano by DIIICA Vice President Dan McKane and President Julie Muller on January 16th at the Division III Commissioners annual meeting at the NCAA Convention in San Diego, California.
“Chuck has been an outstanding representative of all that is good in intercollegiate athletics, and in particular within Division III,” commented McKane.
Commissioner Mitrano has been an influential leader in the areas of sportsmanship, ethics and violence prevention. He is currently serving in the role of DIIICA past president after serving in the presidential role from Jan. 2011- Jan. 2013.
For his dedication to athletics, Commissioner Mitrano was selected as the ECAC Josten's Male Administrator of the Year in 2008 and was recognized as the 2011 recipient of the NCAA Bob Fredrick Award, which annually honors an NCAA coach, administrator or staff member who demonstrates a history of sportsmanship.
He participated in an NCAA Violence Prevention Think Tank in 2012, has moderated a hazing summit at the NCAA Convention in 2007 and was named one of the "100 Most Influential Sports Educators in America" in November 2007. The Empire 8 was also the first athletic conference in any division or level to be named an "All-American Sportsmanship Conference.
The Division III Commissioners Association Meritorious Service Award was established in January of 2001. The award is given annually to an individual who, over time, has made significant and substantial contributions to Division III athletics consistent with the purposes of the Division III Commissioners Association. Eligible candidates include current and former conference and institutional representatives including, but not limited to, conference executives, athletics administrators, faculty athletics representatives, and academic administrators.
