Nazareth downs Alfred State, 73-55

Sophomore Julia Brew scored 18 points on six three-point baskets Thursday as visiting Nazareth defeated Alfred State, 73-55, in a non-conference women's basketball game.
The Golden Flyers, who led 42-19 at halftime, improved to 7-9 overall, while Alfred State dropped to 4-9. Nazareth is idle from Empire 8 Conference play this weekend, but returns to the hardwood Tuesday for an E8 home game against St. John Fisher at 8 p.m.
Brew made 6 of 13 shots from the field -- all three-pointers -- and contributed five rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Lindsey Kelly added 15 points and eight rebounds and junior Hannah Runyon had 14 points and eight rebounds. Runyon also made two three-point baskets and went 8-for-8 from the free-throw line.
The Golden Flyers bolted to a 22-8 lead in the first 10 minutes as Kelly scored six points and Brew and senior Megan Morrison each hit a pair of three-point shots. Brew hit three more three-pointers before the first half ended to give her 15 points in the first 20 minutes. She leads the Golden Flyers and the Empire 8 with 51 three-point baskets for the season.
Nazareth stayed comfortably ahead in the second half as the Golden Flyers were able to empty the bench. Brew hit yet another three-pointer with 9:47 left to make the score 52-34. Alfred State closed to within 11 points, 56-45, on a baskets by Briana Meehan with 7:25 left, but Runyon answered with a three-point basket and a pair of free throws on Nazareth's ensuing possessions to extend the lead back to 16 points, 61-45, with 6:26 left.\
Nazareth hit 24 of 60 shots (40 percent) from the field overall, including 11 of 26 shots (42 percent) from three-point range. Nazareth also went 14 of 16 from the free-throw line (88 percent).
