Cardinals, Highlanders and Bombers Take the Win

St. John Fisher rallied to outscore Nazareth 52-31 in the second half Tuesday as the Cardinals defeated Nazareth in an Empire 8 Conference women's basketball game, 86-68, at the Kidera Gymnasium.
Nazareth led 37-34 after the first 20 minutes, but Fisher continued to shoot the ball well from the field in the second half as the Cardinals connected on 17 of 29 second-half shots (58.6 percent) to rally past the Golden Flyers. The Cardinals also shot well from the foul line, where they hit on 16 of 18 shots (88.9 percent).
In the second half, Nazareth still led 46-43 following a basket by
Melissa Reeves with less than 17 minutes to go, but Cardinals went on an 8-0 run and took the lead for good on a jumper from
Lauren Allen from the top of the key with 14:33 remaining.
The Golden Flyers trimmed Fisher's lead down to seven at 73-66 with just over three minutes left, but the Cardinals used another 8-0 run to pull away, capped by back-to-back 3-pointers from
Claire Walsh in a 22-second span.
Nazareth made 23 of 58 shots from the field (39.7 percent) with a 7-for-22 showing from three-point range. Nazareth also sank 15 of 18 foul shots (83.3 percent).
Houghton 92, Alfred 85 (

Kristen Moose scored a career-high 33 points, including seven in the last two minutes that broke open a tie game and helped the Highlanders to a 92-85 win at Alfred in women's basketball action Tuesday.
The Highlanders got out of the gates quick, gaining a 10-point advantage before five minutes were gone and pushing the advantage to 18 (36-18) at the midway point of the half. The Saxons clawed their way back, pulling to within seven, before Houghton scored the final four points of the half to take a 54-43 lead into the break.
The second half momentum quickly went back to the Saxons' favor as the hosts trimmed the deficit to four points at the 16:37 mark. Houghton regained control to push the lead back to 12 nearing the midway point of the half, but the Saxons used several timely three pointers to slowly edge closer.
Down 80-72, Alfred used a 10-2 run to tie the score at 82 with 2:54 left. Moose put Houghton back up with a layup 30 seconds later, and after two free throws brought Alfred even at 84, the Houghton senior hit two free throws, grabbed a key defensive rebound, and nailed one final three to give the Highlanders an 89-84 lead.
After an Alfred free throw,
Stephany Ellison was fouled, converted one of two from the line and then got a key steal on the ensuing Alfred possession. Though Ellison missed the layup in transition, Moose was there for the rebound and was fouled on the put-back attempt. Moose sank both free throws with 21 ticks left to put the game away.
Ithaca 62, Elmira 48 (

The Ithaca College women's basketball team rallied from a halftime deficit and defeated Elmira College 62-48 on Tuesday at Elmira's Speidel Gymnasium.
Ithaca outscored the host Soaring Eagles 38-22 in the second half of the game on a strong defensive effort during which Elmira managed just six successful field-goal attempts over the final 20 minutes. The Bombers also held a 20-9 advantage in rebounds in the second half of the game. Ithaca's 48 points allowed matched its second-best defensive effort of the year.
In a back-and-forth first half, the largest lead by either side was a three-point lead for Elmira. Ithaca trailed 26-24 at halftime. The Bombers opened the second half with a 23-3 run over the first 10 minutes of play to build an 18-point lead, and maintained a comfortable double-digit advantage down the stretch.
