SPRINGFIELD, MA- The Hartwick men's and women's swimming and diving teams returned to the pool for the first time in 2014 on Saturday afternoon. Both squads competed against host Springfield and Union.
The men defeated the Pride by the score of 180-114 but fell to the Dutchmen 189.5 to 104.5. There was one event winner on the day in
Brad Ranson (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley). He touched the wall first in the 100 free in 21.84. Teammate
Luis Santiesteban (Key Largo, FL) came in third (49.63). Ranson was also second in the 50 free (21.84) and
Evan DeGidio (Jacksonville, FL/Episcopal School) was fourth (22.63).
There were six other second place finishes.
Matt Plunkett (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Cooper City) had ones in the 200 back (2:00.37) and the 100 back (55.65).
Luke Grunewald (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free Acad.) (1000 free – 10:10.51),
Ben Detar (Charleston, SC/Hanahan) (200 fly – 1:58.72), and Santiesteban (200 free – 1:47.89, 200 IM – 2:03.29)) had the others. Grunewald added a third place finish in the 500 free (4:58.24).
Detar also was third in the 200 free (1:50.69) and fourth in the 100 fly (55.92). Fellow Hawk
Joey Mulvehill (Penfield, NY/Penfield) was fourth in the 200 free (1:51.38).
Brendan Quinn (Raleigh, NC/Heritage) came in fourth in the 1000 free (10:25.20) with
Chris Farrell (Charlotte, NC/Rocky River) coming in fifth (10:28.24).
Alexander Gibson (San Leandro, CA/Casto Valley High) came in third in the 200 back (2:03.9) followed by
Zane Grunewald (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free Acad.) (2:04.33), and
Brian Edmister III (Belmont, NY/Genseee Valley Central) (2:05.43).
The 200 medley relay team of Plunkett,
Ryan Cichielo (Cape Coral FL, Cape Coral), Detar, and Ranson was second in a time of 1:39.39. Mulvehill, DeGidio, Santiesteban, and Ranson all teamed up in the 200 free relay and were also second with a posted time of 1:29.14.
The women fell to the Pride 184-109 and to the Dutchwomen 150-138.
Imma Rutigliano (Tillson, NY/John A.Coleman) had a pair of second place results. She posted a time of 56.20 in the 100 free and a time of 2:17.79 in the 200 IM.
Gwen Mathias (Sunland, CA/Southwestern Acad.) came in second in the 1000 free (10:57.42) and
Clare Nelson (South Hadley, MA/South Hadley) was the runner-up in the 200 breast (2:32.92).
Nelson added a third place finish in the 100 breast (1:11.47).
Kelsey Elliot (Cortland, NY/Homer) came in third in the 50 free (26.10). Mathias was third in in the 500 free (5:26) with
Kaitlyn Campbell (Hanover Park, IL/Glenhard North) right behind her (5:32.97). Campbell's highest result of the afternoon came in the 100 free with a third place result (57.56).
The 200 back competition saw Mathias place fourth (2:19.61) followed by
Helen Merkley (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) (2:21.80), and
Allison Agate (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) (2:23.10). Agate also was fourth in the 100 back (1:04.95).
The 200 free relay quartet consisting of Elliot,
Rachel Bellis (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Acad.), Campbell, and Rutigliano were second in 1:45.36). Elliot would team up with Agate, Nelson, and Bierwert in the 200 medley relay where the squad turned in a third place time of 1:57.66.
In the diving portion,
Lindsay Bowker (Bothell, WA/Inglemoor) totaled 212.8 points in the one meter completion that was good for third. She came in fourth in the three meter event with a final tally of 204.95.
Both teams return to action next Sunday with a dual meet against SUNY Cortland. Start time will be at 1p.m.
