SUMTER, S.C. (
October 10, 2014) –
Junior Matthew Heinrich of the Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team advanced in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Small College Championship Friday, and will compete for a national championship in singles Saturday morning.

In doubles, Heinrich and junior Ben Foran fell in in the semis in a close back and forth battle that saw two sets go to a tiebreaker. The pair regrouped later in the day to beat Chicago College's senior Deepak Sabada and freshman David Liu , 6-4, 6-4 to take third place.

The four day tournament is being held at The Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C.

As he did on Thursday, Heinrich took control of the singles match early with a first set win against second seeded Johns Hopkins sophomore Michael Buxbaun. The junior jumped out to an early 4-1 before taking the set 6-2, then took the second in a tiebreaker to win the match. In the second, Heinrich held a slim lead throughout before breaking a 5-5 tie to take the win.

From there, Heinrich teamed with Foran for the second round of doubles against senior Connor Hudson and freshman Kalyan Chadalavasa from Pomona-Pitzer College. A back and forth first set eventually led to a tiebreaker where Heinrich and Foran overcame a 4-5 deficit to take the win. Pomona-Pitzer rebounded though with 6-3 win in the second before taking the third in another tiebreaker. Heinrich and Foran overcame a 3-4 deficit in the set to take a 5-4 lead, but the Pomona-Pitzer duo was able to recover to take the win in the breaker.

Heinrich will battle Chicago's freshman Nicolas Chua tomorrow with match time set for 8:30 a.m.
