St. John Fisher College and Utica are each 5-0 and Washington & Jefferson College is 4-0 in the Empire 8 standings. Stevens and Ithaca College are tied for fourth place. The top-four teams earn a berth in the conference tournament with the regular-season champ getting the rite to host the tournament.
UTICA 3, ITHACA 2
The Utica College field hockey team fought off two one-goal deficits to down host Ithaca College, 3-2, in Empire 8 Conference action Saturday afternoon. Senior
Hannah Mackey led the Pioneers with two goals on the day.
Mackey has now tied the Empire 8 Conference single-season goal scoring record of 27, which teammate
Louise Steele-Norton accomplished in 2012. Mackey also broke both the UC and Empire 8 single-season point scoring records, as she has tallied 59 points on the year.
The Pioneers, who have now won their last nine games, improve to 11-1 on the year and 5-0 in the Empire 8. UC will return to action Sunday as it hosts E8 rival and two-time defending regular season conference champion, Stevens Institute of Technology. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Ithaca jumped out to a quick lead as Danielle Coiro netted her fifth of the year, just 2:59 into the contest. The Pioneers battled back at 11:38 as Mackey netted her first of the game. Once again, Ithaca took the lead as sophomore Colleen Keegan-Twombly tallied her sixth of the year, assisted by Coiro, at 18:28. Mackey evened the score just under ten minutes later as she took a feed from classmate
Chasity Eckert from the top of the circle and fired a shot into the corner of the cage.
Senior
Alaina Stojkovski scored the lone goal of the second half on her seventh of the year to all but seal the Utica victory. The tally was Stojkovski's second game-winner of the season. Freshman
Samantha Whitehouse made four saves in nearly 45 minutes of action as she registered her second victory of the season, while last year's Empire 8 Rookie of the Year, Katie Lass made ten saves in the loss for Ithaca.
ST. JOHN FISHER 6, NAZARETH 0
Freshman
Emily Markarian continued to rewrite history for the St. John Fisher College field hockey program as she scored four goals in a 6-0 victory over host Nazareth College on Saturday.
Earlier this season, Markarian scored the first hat trick in the history of the four-year program at Fisher. Her four goals today is the new single game-high for Fisher field hockey. With 11 goals this season, the Orchard Park native is now tied with
Elizabeth Cusack in scoring.
The Cardinals jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game with goals from Markarian and
Noelle Knox. Markarian opened the scoring in the third minute with
Marissa Vedella earning the assist. Just two minutes later, Knox scored her first goal of the year with Vedella earning the assist again. She nearly scored a goal of her own in the 12th minute when her shot hit the post.
Fisher continued to dominate the offense with 14 shots in the first half and held the Golden Flyers to zero. Markarian scored her second goal of the day in the 29th minute to give Fisher a comfortable 3-0 lead going into halftime.
Markarian opened the second half with another pair of goals to add to Fisher's comfortable lead.
Stacie Skidmore fed the forward a pass in the 42nd minute then the freshman took an unassisted goal just two minutes later.
Jessie Smyrski would score her first goal of the season in the 60th minute to push the Cardinals' lead to 6-0.
Alexis Zakala earned the assist.
Danielle Famolaro made four saves in goal in 59 minutes in goal.
Amanda Maciol replaced her in goal for the remaining 11 minutes.
Fisher improves to 9-3 on the year and 5-0 in conference play, while Naz falls to 6-10 and 2-4, respectively.
WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON 2, HARTWICK 1
Catherine Beaudoin scored in the 99th minute to send the Washington & Jefferson field hockey team to a 2-1, double-overtime win at Hartwick in Empire 8 play.
The win moves the Presidents to 8-5 on the season and 4-0 in the E8. The Hawks fall to 2-10 this year with an 0-4 mark in the Empire 8.
Lauren Brown scored the game's first goal on a rebound off a Beaudoin shot just 6:40 into play.
The score would hold up until 22 seconds were left in regulation when Hartwick's Mckenzie Bond scored off a cross by Mikaelan Stuilgross.
Beaudoin ended the game with 1:20 left in the second overtime after her shot made it through traffic. Brown assisted on the game-winner.
Thanks to a 10-4 advantage in the second overtime, W&J out-shot Hartwick, 27-25. The Hawks held a 9-1 lead in the first overtime. Brown and
Amanda Steffey each had six shots to lead the Presidents. Beaudoin tallied five shots and
Gina Taglieri registered four shots.
Morgan Brozena earned the win in goal, making 12 saves in going the distance.
STEVENS 3, ELMIRA 1
The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team improved to 3-2 in the Empire 8 with a 3-1 conference road win at Elmira College Saturday afternoon.
The Ducks scored three first-half goals en route to the win, improving to 6-8 overall. Elmira fell to 1-10 overall and 0-5 in the conference.
Stevens scored all its goals over a span of 5:52 of game time and before 10 minutes had elapsed in the game.
The first was scored by junior back
Angela Bauroth, getting the first goal of her career at 3:45. The play began with a penalty corner and ended when a rebound found Bauroth off the right side. The junior controlled and buried her shot in the left corner to give the Ducks the lead for good.
Freshman
Victoria Alvarez made it 2-0 3:13 later with the play also originating via a penalty corner. Freshman
Haines Duff received a pass at the top of the circle before finding Alvarez in front for the score. It was the 13th goal of the year for Alvarez and the first assist of Duff's young career.
Stevens' final score of the game was similar to the first two in that it originated on a penalty corner. After the ball was tossed in front, a scrum ensued and it eventually popped out to Alvarez on the left side. The rookie was able to find sophomore forward
Taylor Welch off the left post who then lifted her shot in for her ninth goal of the season.
Stevens dominated the action from start-to-finish despite allowing a goal midway through the second half. Sophomore goalkeeper
Emily Stukenborg made six saves to earn the win between the pipes for the Ducks.
Stevens ended with a 19-10 margin in shots and a 16-7 lead in penalty corners. Fourteen of the Ducks' 19 shots were on goal.
