Hawks, Pioneers and Presidents Victorious on Sunday
HARTWICK 3, ELMIRA 2
Sophomore
Rebecca Reilly scored twice and classmate
Sarah Ryan added the game-winner with 2:05 remaining in the game as Hartwick's field hockey team edged Elmira 3-2 on Sunday at the Murray Athletic Center. The victory for the Hawks is their first in the Empire 8 Conference this season and snaps a five-game winless streak.
All of the day's scoring came in a 25-minute window in the second half. The Soaring Eagles would battle back to tie the score twice until Ryan's clincher.
The first half saw only eight shots in total. Hartwick's lone shot came roughly six minutes in from
Maxine Dunn but it was saved by EC keeper Julie Hockenberger. Hartwick goalie
Yanna Boggio made all three saves on the Soaring Eagles' three shots on target.
Reilly broke the ice 7:53 into the second half, scoring on a rebound. It marked her second tally of the season.
Just 2:51 later, the Purple and Gold tied it on a Kourtny Schwerdtman goal. She finished off a pass from teammate Julia Derco.
Less than seven minutes after EC evened the match, Reilly put the Hawks in front once again with an unassisted goal at 52:06. But just under eight minutes later, the two sides were deadlocked once again as Katie Carroll registered an unassisted tally.
The match remained 2-2 for the next eight minutes with overtime looming after the Hawks battled through nearly 100 minutes yesterday against Washington & Jefferson. But Ryan came through with the big goal to finish the Soaring Eagles off with her third tally of the season at the 67:55 mark.
Elmira earned a pair of penalty corners in the final minute and got a shot off but Boggio was there to stop it for the last of her 12 saves on the day.
The Hawks improve to 15-3 against Elmira all-time. They have now won 10 straight against the Soaring Eagles.
WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON 2, ITHACA 1
The Washington & Jefferson field hockey team clinched a berth in the Empire 8 field hockey tournament with a 2-1 win at Ithaca.
With the win, the Presidents return to the E8 tournament after a one-year hiatus. W&J improves to 9-5 overall and 5-0 in the conference, maintaining pace with first-place Utica who is 6-0, half game ahead of the Presidents and St. John Fisher (5-0 E8). Ithaca drops to 5-7 on the year and 3-3 in the league.
After a scoreless first half,
Allison Morrissey gave the Presidents a 1-0 lead 2:57 into the second period when she scored on her own rebound for her third goal of the season.
Caroline Kallos extended the margin to 2-0 at the 46:51 mark on a shot from high circle that went in through traffic after a pass from
Gina Taglieri.
The hosts halved the deficit to 2-1 in the 62nd minute, but W&J held on for the 2-1 victory.
The Bombers held a 15-6 lead on shots in the game, thanks to a 7-1 advantage in the first half. Kallos, Morrissey and
Amanda Steffey each recorded a pair of shots for the Presidents.
Morgan Brozena improved to 5-4 on the year, making two saves in 90 minutes.
UTICA 4, STEVENS 1
Four different players scored on the day as the Utica College field hockey team defeated Empire 8 rival Stevens Institute of Technology, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
Utica improves to 12-1 on the year and 6-0 in the Empire 8 Conference. The Pioneers move their program-best winning streak to ten games and remain unbeaten at home.
After nearly 20 full minutes of scoreless action, senior
Hannah Mackey broke the deadlock with her Empire 8 record 28th goal of the year. Utica added an insurance tally in the final minute of the first half as junior
Colleen Dowling fired a low shot inside the left post off a penalty corner from
Nikki Kieffer.
UC carried its momentum into the second half as senior
Louise Steele-Norton tallied her ninth of the year off a feed from classmate
Adriana Surprenant. Senior
Alaina Stojkovski capped off the scoring for Utica with just over five minutes remaining as she found the back of the net for her eighth of the year. The Ducks were able to spoil Utica's shutout hopes as Stevens was awarded a penalty corner as time expired. The ball bounced around in front of the net before Dailyn Brook was able to bat it out of the air and into the cage.
Freshman
Samantha Whitehouse made seven saves in her first collegiate start, while her counterpart, Emily Stukenborg made 17 saves in the loss. Stevens drops to 6-9 on the year and 3-3 in the conference.
