Day Two at NYS Women's Tennis Championships
The Elmira College women's tennis team's run at the New York State Women's Tennis Championships came to an end today as EC's final competitors were eliminated by seeded opponents.
After wrapping-up play on Friday with victories in the first round of their respective doubles draws, EC's second doubles team of
Amy Schmidt '15 and
Rebecca Zeuschner '18 as well as their third doubles team of
Kayla Fitzgerald '15 and
Megan Fitzgerald '15 were back in action on Saturday morning for their quarterfinal matches. Both teams, however, would fall in the quarters to seeded opponents from Skidmore College.
Schmidt and Zeuschner battled with their Thoroughbred opponents early, down just a break at 3-2, but Skidmore would eventually pull away for the 8-3 victory. The Fitzgerald sisters suffered a similar fate as they were taken down by the number one seed in the third doubles bracket by an 8-2 score.
After a bit of a break,
Kayla Fitzgerald retook the court for her semifinal singles match against Vassar College's Winnie Yeates, who earned the number one seed in the fourth singles draw. Yeates proved to be too strong for Fitzgerald, defeating the Elmira senior, 6-0, 6-0.
